The Scriptless Moment
Nobody planned it. Nobody could have scripted it. Yet the funniest and most poetic moment of the 12th AMVCA did not happen during a performance. It did not happen on the red carpet.
It happened when Uche Montana was handed a microphone.
Her job was simple. Announce a nominee category. But she decided to use the mic for something else entirely.
She walked up and took a breath. Then, with the energy of someone who had rehearsed this moment privately for years, she launched into a full acceptance speech. The crowd caught on quickly. Laughter built across the room. She kept going, thanking people, getting emotional, truly committing to the bit.
Her co-presenter finally stepped in. She cut her off and pulled her back to reality. The actual job was announcing nominees. She did that too.
The room thought it was hilarious. Everyone clipped the moment. Everyone shared it. It was the kind of bit that follows a person home from an award show and lives on the internet forever.
Then, hours later, her name was actually called.
The Joke Became Truth
Uche Montana won the Trailblazer Award at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. The ceremony was held Saturday night at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.
The same woman who had stood on that stage earlier, playfully delivering a speech for an award she had not won, walked back up. For real this time. To collect one.
You truly cannot write that. Nevertheless, it happened on live television. In front of the entire Nollywood industry. And everyone watching at home.
The Journey Behind the Trophy
What makes this win land even harder is the context of Uche Montana’s journey.
Consider this. Just last year, she broke into tears of joy upon receiving her first-ever AMVCA Best Actress nomination. She got the nod for her role in ‘Thin Line’, Mercy Aigbe’s film. She posted a video of herself sobbing in disbelief. She credited the film’s team for the recognition. She said it felt surreal.
That was a nomination. Not a win. And it still moved her to tears.
Going from crying over a first nomination in 2025 to collecting the Trailblazer Award in 2026 is a remarkable arc. It takes years to build. But it only took one night to deliver.

What the Trailblazer Award Means
The Trailblazer Award is not a regular acting category. Additionally, it is not handed out every year. It goes to someone the industry believes is doing something worth recognizing. Beyond a single performance. Someone whose presence, consistency, and contribution are shaping the direction of Nollywood.
On the same night, veteran actors Kanayo O. Kanayo and Sola Sobowale received the Industry Merit Award. They were honored for decades of service to African cinema. To share a stage with those names, in that category, on that night? That is no small thing.
The Manifestation
She walked into the AMVCA and made everyone laugh with a fake speech. Then she walked out with a real award.
If that is not the most “Nollywood” ending to an AMVCA night, it is certainly the most memorable one. The joke set up the moment. The moment made the joke mean something it did not know it meant when she was telling it.
Uche Montana manifested it in front of everyone. She just did not know the universe was listening quite that quickly.
