Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo is at the centre of a heated online debate after a series of posts urging citizens not to turn political differences into personal enmities.

On Thursday, October 15, the “Great Nation” crooner simply wrote:

“Stop making enemies because of politics.”

He followed up later the same day:

“As u can see, politicians no really dey fight. Na the common man dey gather enemies. If you like be killing ya sef, all they need to do is move party, and they become friends.”

The posts quickly racked up reposts, quotes, replies, and equally fierce pushback. Many Nigerians argued that politics in the country is not an abstract preference but a matter of survival, security, economic hardship, and accountability.

Critics said treating supporters of certain parties as enemies is justified when policies and governance affect lives daily. Others accused Dakolo of speaking from privilege or of inconsistency given past controversies.

On Saturday morning, October 17, Dakolo returned with a video captioned simply:

“Dear Nigerians, I am not your Enemy.” Speaking calmly to the camera, he reinforced his earlier point.

According to Dakolo, the same men who appear locked in fierce public rivalry often greet each other warmly behind closed doors.

He said he was stunned the first time he witnessed it, they hug, catch up like old friends, ask about one another’s children by name, and send greetings to their wives. These are the same people, he noted, that ordinary Nigerians are encouraged to see as bitter enemies.

Dakolo emphasised that keeping the public divided and fighting among themselves while they remain largely united in private is how the political class wins.

“This is how they win us,  this is how they beat us; they divide us, they make sure we fight among ourselves,” he said in the video.

Timi Dakolo Says No Affiliation, No Payment

The Chorus Leader further stressed that he is not affiliated with any political party – APC, PDP, ADC, or any other, and that no one paid him to say this. He was simply sharing what he had seen.

“I’m not affiliated to any political party, APC, PDP, ADC, NDC, none. Nobody give me money.  I just come tell Una one secret. You see these politicians Wey Una dey fight like this, they no dey really fight; them dey catch cruise when the camera are off more than us.”

In conclusion, he remained consistent with the posts that first got him trending, asking Nigerians to stop collecting personal enemies because of politics.

The message has already drawn mixed reactions. Some see it as a necessary reality check about elite unity versus public division. Others continue to argue that the stakes of governance in Nigeria are too high for such advice to land softly.
