Recognition in the ever-changing world of Nollywood does not always come in the form of trophies. The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards continues to set the standard for excellence, yet many outstanding performers continue to build impressive careers without winning.
Their performances captivate audiences, earn critical acclaim, and push the industry forward. While awards recognise accomplishment, they do not define it completely because in Nollywood, consistency, influence, and storytelling power matter just as much as winning a prized statue.
1. Ibrahim Chatta

Ibrahim Chatta has explained why he never received a nomination from the AMVCA despite his decades-long career in Nollywood during an interview on the ‘Curiosity Made Me Ask’ podcast. The actor revealed that he has never submitted any of his works for consideration, not because of a lack of merit.
Chatta made it clear that he chose not to participate in the process. He emphasised that the AMVCA does not serve as the only source of validation for his work. “Whenever I want to apply for AMVCA, I will make a film and submit it so that I can be rated,” he said. “They can then decide if I deserve the honour or not. But I have not offered them a film to nominate me for.”
2. Kemi Adetiba

Kemi Adetiba stands out as one of Nollywood’s most influential filmmakers and directors. She has built a reputation for bold storytelling and a distinct cinematic style, delivering some of the industry’s most memorable productions.
Her political crime film King of Boys earned her a Best Director nomination. The film gained widespread praise for its depth, powerful performances, and gripping narrative, quickly becoming a cultural benchmark in Nollywood. Many expected it to dominate the awards season. Despite strong anticipation and multiple nominations, the film did not secure a win at the 7th edition of the AMVCA in 2020, which surprised fans and sparked conversations about possible snubs.
Adetiba’s absence from the winners’ list has not weakened her influence. Her work continues to shape modern Nigerian cinema and introduce unforgettable characters.

4. Iyabo Ojo

Iyabo Ojo remains one of Nollywood’s most prominent and constant figures. She has received multiple nominations throughout the years, including most recently for her film Labake Olododo.
