South Africa lost one of its brightest footballing talents on Saturday, July 11, 2026. Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, died at just 25 years old, days after returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The details surrounding his death have not been made public. Authorities have not released an official statement, and the cause of death has not been confirmed. In the absence of official information, widespread speculation has circulated online. Out of respect for his family and the sensitivity of the circumstances, what can be said with certainty is simply this: he is gone, and he left behind people who loved him deeply.

The Person Behind the Jersey

Before earning his Bafana Bafana cap and donning the Sundowns shirt, Jayden Adams was someone’s partner, someone’s father, and someone’s grandson. This is the version of him the people closest to him knew first.

His longtime partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, described him not just as a footballer but as a human being; her best friend, her greatest supporter, the person she built a life with.

“There are no words to describe the pain I’m feeling,” she wrote in a tribute after his passing. “Rest in peace, my love. Thank you for every memory, every laugh, every hug, and every moment we shared. You were not only the love of my life but also my greatest supporter and my best friend.”

She continued: “A part of my heart left with you, and I will carry your love with me forever. Until we meet again, I’ll miss you every single day. Rest easy, my angel. I love you always and forever.”

His Grandmother And the Grief He Carried to the World Cup

Family was central to who Jayden was. He was raised by his grandmother, Marianna Adams, a woman whose influence on his life and career ran deep.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while representing South Africa against Mexico, Czechia, and South Korea, Jayden was grieving. His grandmother passed away during the tournament. But he still stayed and played.

“My legs were playing, but my heart was in heaven with her,” he said at the time. “She’s the reason I’m here. Wearing the green and gold meant everything to her.”

Jayden started against Mexico and Czechia. He came off the bench in the historic win over South Korea that sent Bafana Bafana to the Round of 32, which was the first time South Africa had reached the World Cup knockout stage. He did all of that while carrying a loss that most people would have used as a reason to go home.

He went home after elimination from the tournament. And then, just days later, he was gone.

What His Teammates Said

Tributes from Mamelodi Sundowns, Bafana Bafana teammates, and the broader South African football community poured in following the news. Players who had stood beside him in training and on matchdays described a man whose energy and character were felt far beyond the pitch.

According to News24, Bafana Bafana striker Iqraam Rayners rushed to Jayden’s apartment as soon as he heard the news. He was there for most of the day, staying by his teammate’s side until the forensic team arrived and took the body away.

The grief is widespread. But it is heaviest at home; where a five-year-old girl, a partner who called him her best friend, and a football community that watched him play through unimaginable pain are all trying to make sense of a loss that came far too soon.
