Zuko may become the most important album of Fireboy DML’s career. Although the singer has not confirmed rumours about leaving YBNL Nation, anticipation surrounding the project continues to grow.

His label boss, Olamide, has also remained silent on the speculation.

As the singer begins teasing his upcoming project, Zuko, many fans believe they are witnessing the start of a new chapter in one of Afrobeats’ most successful careers.

Whether those rumours prove true or not, what’s already clear is that Zuko may be the most important album Fireboy has released since his breakthrough.

For seven years, Fireboy has been one of the defining artists under YBNL Nation.

Signed by Olamide in 2018 after the success of his song Jealous, the singer quickly established himself as one of Nigeria’s brightest new voices. Unlike many artists who built their sound around street-hop, Fireboy leaned into melody, R&B and emotionally driven songwriting, creating a lane that set him apart within the label.

His debut album, Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps, announced him as more than just another promising newcomer. Songs such as Jealous, What If I Say and King introduced listeners to a softer, more introspective side of Afrobeats.

He followed it with Apollo in 2020, an album that produced some of the biggest records of the year, including Champion, Tattoo and Eli. The project won Album of the Year at The Headies, placing him among the country’s leading artists.

Then came the song that changed everything. Released in 2021, Peru became Fireboy’s biggest global hit. The remix featuring British superstar Ed Sheeran introduced him to an even wider audience, charting in multiple countries and becoming one of Afrobeats’ biggest international records.

His third album, Playboy, expanded his international reach through collaborations with artists including Chris Brown, Asake, Shenseea and Euro. By the time he released Adedamola in 2024, Fireboy had already built one of the strongest catalogues of his generation.

Over the years, he has collected numerous awards and nominations, including Headies, AFRIMA and Soundcity MVP honours. His music has amassed billions of streams across digital platforms, while sold-out tours across Europe, North America and Africa have established him as one of Afrobeats’ biggest live performers.

That success explains why Zuko already carries enormous expectations.

The project arrives at a time when rumours continue to circulate about Fireboy’s future with YBNL. Although neither the singer nor the label has confirmed any departure, fans have pointed to his recent teasers as signs that a major career transition could be approaching.

Some believe an independent Fireboy could enjoy greater creative freedom after spending years building his own identity under Olamide’s mentorship. Others are less certain.

Several fans have questioned whether any artist can easily replicate the support system that helped shape Fireboy’s career. Beyond music production, YBNL has provided strategic direction, industry connections and global distribution that contributed to his rise from an emerging singer to an international Afrobeats star.

Social media reactions reflect that uncertainty. While many fans have expressed excitement about what they describe as Fireboy’s “new era,” others hope any reported exit from YBNL is either carefully planned or untrue. Some believe remaining under the label could provide the stability needed for the next phase of his career, while others argue he has already achieved enough to thrive independently.

For now, however, those conversations remain speculative. The only certainty is that Fireboy has begun building anticipation for Zuko, a project that many expect to define the next phase of his artistic journey.

Whether it arrives as another YBNL release or eventually becomes the beginning of an independent chapter, Zuko enters the spotlight carrying unusually high expectations.
