So, can regular intercourse really improve a person’s appearance?

Doctors say the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

Physical intimacy is not a skincare treatment. It does not permanently improve a person’s complexion. However, the body’s natural response to sexual activity may create what many people call the “post-sex glow.”

One reason is increased blood circulation.

During sexual activity, the heart pumps more blood around the body. That extra blood delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the skin. The result can be a temporary flushed appearance that looks healthier or more radiant. Dermatologists say the effect fades quickly and should not replace a proper skincare routine.

Hormones also play a role.

Intercourse triggers the release of oxytocin and endorphins, often called the body’s “feel-good” hormones. These chemicals reduce stress, improve mood and promote relaxation. Chronic stress can contribute to acne, dull skin and premature ageing. Lower stress levels may therefore help the skin look healthier.

Sleep may also contribute.

Many people sleep more deeply after orgasm. Good-quality sleep allows the body to repair itself overnight and supports healthier skin. While intercourse does not directly improve the skin, better sleep may contribute to a fresher appearance.

Scientists have also examined whether research supports the so-called “post-sex glow.”

Researchers published one of the earliest studies in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in 1987. They found that both men and women experienced a significant increase in oxytocin during sexual arousal and orgasm. Oxytocin supports bonding, relaxation and emotional wellbeing.

Researchers reached a similar conclusion in a 2021 systematic review published in Sexual Medicine. They analysed 13 studies on oxytocin and sexual activity. They found that oxytocin levels consistently increased during orgasm. However, they found little evidence linking those hormonal changes to lasting improvements in skin health or physical appearance.

Researchers have also explored the relationship between intimacy and overall wellbeing.

A 2024 clinical trial published in JAMA Psychiatry found that affectionate physical intimacy, together with oxytocin, improved wound healing and lowered stress markers in couples. The researchers did not conclude that intercourse alone improves appearance or skin health.

Dermatologists, however, caution against overstating those findings.

Current research does not show that intercourse can permanently brighten the skin, prevent wrinkles or replace a consistent skincare routine. Genetics, diet, hydration, regular exercise, sun protection and adequate sleep remain far more important for maintaining healthy skin.

Health experts also stress that every sexual encounter should be safe and consensual. Unprotected intercourse increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. For that reason, any discussion about potential health benefits should also include responsible sexual health practices.

Iyabo Ojo’s comment reflects a belief many people have heard before. Current research suggests there is some science behind the temporary “post-sex glow.” However, doctors say no evidence supports intercourse as a long-term beauty treatment. A healthy lifestyle remains the strongest predictor of healthy skin.
