Uganda’s CDF Demands $1B and a Wife To Keep Turkish Embassy Open

This is diplomacy like an African Netflix drama.

Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces, and the son of longtime President Yoweri Museveni, says that unless Turkey provides $1B and the country’s most beautiful woman as his wife, he will close its embassy in Uganda.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the military boss, hopped on X, threatening to remove Turkey’s embassy from Uganda. He said that if they don’t cough up $1 billion and hand over “the most beautiful woman in Turkey” as his wife within 30 days, he will close it.

Before these posts, Kainerugaba was known on X for posting bold and sometimes highly controversial stuff. The reason for this is tied to Somalia.

Why This Demand?

Somalia is a country that’s been a hotspot for terrorism for years. As part of the African Union’s mission to fight the Al-Shabaab terrorist group, Uganda has been sending its troops to Somalia since 2007.

This means that for almost 20 years, Ugandan soldiers have been risking their lives in Somalia. Uganda has been spending money and sustaining casualties to help bring some stability to the country.

Kainerugaba is angry because he says Turkey has quietly cashed in on the stability that Ugandan soldiers gave to Somalia.

Turkish companies scored huge contracts like running the main port and airport in Mogadishu, building infrastructure, and securing major business deals – all because the area is safer thanks to Ugandan (and other African) forces.

So Kainerugaba is demanding a “security dividend,” which is basically $1 billion as payback for Uganda doing the heavy lifting while Turkey profits.

He tweeted: “For Turkey, it’s a really simple deal… Either they pay us or I close their embassy here. They can reciprocate and shut our embassy in Turkey as well. No problem.”

He also warned that he would ban Turkish Airlines from Ugandan airspace and cut all diplomatic ties if they don’t sort it out in 30 days.

In the same humorous thread (some posts were deleted), he added: “On top of the $1 billion from Turkey, I want the most beautiful woman in that country for a wife!”

According to The Times of Islamabad, this drama follows some other tensions bubbling between the two countries. There have been extradition disputes involving a Ugandan dissident living in Turkey and some business disputes.

Uganda’s government has quickly tried to calm things down. It says there is no cause for alarm and that relations are still okay. But Kainerugaba’s posts lit up the internet – people are calling it everything from “genius negotiation” to “absolute chaos.”

Turkey has not officially responded publicly as of the filing of this report, but you can bet diplomats on both sides are scrambling.
