Popular Nigerian comedian and actor, Bovi Ugboma, has shared an interesting perspective on marriage, suggesting that couples should renew their marital commitment every five years.
Speaking during an episode of the Dear Ife series by Diary of a Naija Girl, Bovi said regular marriage reviews involving both families could help strengthen relationships and improve accountability between spouses.
According to him, while the word “expiry” may sound harsh when discussing marriage, the idea of periodic renewal could be beneficial: “Expiry is a powerful word, but I think every marriage should be renewed, for example, every five years within the two families.”

Such a process would create an opportunity for both families to openly discuss the state of the marriage, address any concerns that may have developed over time, and ask important questions during the review process, including whether the partners still want to remain married and whether they are genuinely happy in the relationship. “Questions should be asked: Do you still want to marry? Are you happy in this marriage? Come and table what has been happening,” he stated.
These periodic reviews could encourage spouses to be more responsible and attentive to their duties; knowing that a family review is approaching may motivate couples to make positive changes in their behaviour and address unresolved issues before they escalate. Families could use the opportunity to assess whether both partners are fulfilling their responsibilities. For instance, they could ask whether the wife is happy, whether the husband provides for the family, whether he treats his wife with respect, and whether both spouses are meeting their obligations to each other.
As he stated, “The families would ask questions about whether the wife is happy, if the man provides, if the man shouts at the wife, if he takes on his responsibilities as a man, and vice versa.” This renewal process could also include a ceremonial aspect, making it a meaningful occasion for couples to reaffirm their commitment to one another.
