The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a residential building in Lagos where more than 100 sacks of empty alcoholic beverage bottles were allegedly stored for supply to suspected counterfeiters.

The agency said its Investigation and Enforcement Directorate found the bottles at 322B Meiran Road, Agbado Oke-Odo, Lagos. NAFDAC said the containers were destroyed to prevent their reuse in the production and packaging of counterfeit alcoholic drinks.

NAFDAC destroyed the bottles to stop people from reusing them for counterfeit drinks.

In a video posted on X by NAFDAC NIGERIA , Assistant Director Kunle Ojo said credible intelligence led the team to the site. He described the area as a secluded residential neighbourhood. The video showed stacks of bottles under tarpaulins inside the premises.

Ojo said the bottles came in different sizes and carried labels from several alcoholic-beverage brands.

“We have bottles of different sizes, 750cl and all the rest. We have Action Bitter, we have different kinds,” he said.

He added that people allegedly planned to distribute the bottles to suspected counterfeiters. He also identified containers bearing the Royal Circle Premium Whiskey label.

However, NAFDAC did not state whether officials arrested anyone. The agency also did not announce the date of the physical operation.

Ojo also urged residents to report suspicious storage, repackaging or distribution of regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office. Ojo called the storage of such bottles in residential areas unacceptable to the government.

The agency said the intervention supported its broader enforcement work against counterfeit and falsified alcoholic beverages. “We are here to safeguard the health of the nation,” Ojo said in the video.

Moreover, Ojo said the activity threatened public health because it occurred inside a residential area and those users could put the containers back into circulation during another production process.

The agency has not named any operator or publicly announced any arrests, charges, laboratory findings or a seizure value.

Consumers should buy alcoholic beverages from reputable outlets and check product seals and information before purchase.
