Farida Abdullahi Sule likely expected warm wishes when she posted photos celebrating her son’s second birthday. Instead, the images triggered a flurry of reactions online, as several Nigerians questioned her decision to showcase what they described as expensive gold jewelry at a time when many citizens continue to battle economic hardship.
The photos showed Farida dressed in an elegant outfit and adorned with several gold pieces. While some followers congratulated her and her family, others criticized what they viewed as a public display of wealth at a time when many Nigerians struggle with economic hardship. Among the critics was an X user identified as Bashir, who argued that the photos sent the wrong message given the current realities facing many citizens.

“With all due respect, Madam First Lady, there is widespread poverty in the country. Flaunting expensive jewelry just for your son’s birthday photoshoot sends the wrong message, especially when there’s extreme poverty in the land. People are finding it difficult to feed. As the wife of a public official, you need to be mindful of the mood and realities of the people. Sometimes, we simply need to read the room,” he wrote. Another X user, Dr. Asiya Hashim, also questioned the display of the jewelry. “Who are you trying to oppress with those gold pieces that you are displaying by raising your hands up and down? Do you think Nigerians’ concern right now is your gold and expensive clothes?” she asked. A third user questioned the source of the jewelry and whether Farida has an independent source of income. “Where did you get the money for all the gold jewelry, Farida? Do you have a job?” the user asked.
The photos have since generated reactions across social media platforms. While some users criticized the display as insensitive, these reactions have also revived discussions about how public officials and their families present their lifestyles on social media during periods of economic difficulty.
Farida was unbothered and made no comment on those questions, but rather she shared more pictures of her family.
