A Nigerian TikTok creator known as Barbii Nelly is at the centre of a growing online controversy after a car dealer claimed she filmed content inside a luxury Mercedes-Benz during an inspection visit and posted it to suggest the vehicle had been gifted to her; however, according to the dealer, no purchase was ever made.
Barbiie Nelly is a popular social media personality known for lifestyle and fan-engagement content. A recent post claiming she received an ₦80 million Mercedes-Benz as a Girlfriend’s Day gift from her boyfriend, Destiny, has become publicly controversial following statements from the dealer involved.

What the Dealer Alleged
The allegations were made by a Nigerian car dealer identified as Phd Broker, whose account of events quickly spread across X and other platforms.
‘Don’t believe everything you see on social media,’ Phd Broker said. ‘Barbii Nelly, who posted videos with a Mercedes-Benz worth over ₦80 million and claimed it was a Girlfriend’s Day gift from her boyfriend, only came to inspect the car. They said they would return the next day to buy it, but unknown to us, they had already recorded videos with the car during the inspection and later posted them online to deceive their followers.’
According to the dealer, Destiny came to inspect the vehicle on Friday night and said that he and Barbii Nelly would return the following day to complete the purchase. ‘While we were negotiating payment, we were unaware that Barbii Nelly was making content in the car,’ PhD Broker alleged.
He also added that their clear intention was to deceive followers and, in his words, ‘probably scam their followers.’

The Fallout
The videos Barbii Nelly posted showed her posing with the Mercedes-Benz in a manner that led many of her followers to congratulate her on what they believed to be a lavish gift. The dealer’s disclaimer, posted after the videos had already circulated widely, reframed the entire situation.
Phd Broker’s statement has since attracted thousands of reactions, with users debating the ethics of staging content with merchandise that was never purchased and presenting it as genuine to an audience that took it at face value.
As of the time of this report, Barbii Nelly has not publicly responded to the allegations. The incident has added another entry to a growing list of controversies around performative wealth on Nigerian social media and also raised familiar questions about where the line falls between aspiration and outright deception.
