A Delta State government official was seriously assaulted and injured in Warri on Sunday after chaos erupted at an APC leadership meeting, with conflicting accounts emerging over what exactly set off the violence.
The official, Mr Tempo Mudi, also known as Temple Mudi, serves as Senior Special Assistant on Protocol to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. He previously held a similar role under former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, making him a recognisable figure in Delta’s political circles.
What Took Place at PTI
The incident occurred at the Petroleum Training Institute Conference Centre in Warri/Effurun during a Delta State APC Leadership Meeting. 
According to viral videos and social media reports, Mudi addressed the gathering and described the Tinubu administration as ‘the best thing to happen to Nigerians.’ His comments reportedly angered a group of youths who were there, and the venue soon descended into chaos, with physical fights, chairs being thrown and property damaged. Mudi was allegedly attacked, chased and beaten and had to be treated for his injuries.
However, other accounts present a different version. Some sources claim the violence began when Mudi himself confronted and attacked a young man attending the meeting over a personal dispute. These sources also allege that Mudi is a member of the Buccaneer confraternity, while the other individual belongs to the Axe confraternity, and that the confrontation escalated when others affiliated with the Axe confraternity joined the fight.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to reporters described Mudi being chased with plastic chairs and bottles before allegedly being stabbed multiple times in the head, neck, and back. He was eventually rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A third perspective offered by other eyewitnesses attributes the violence to long-standing political differences rather than any confraternity dispute. ‘What actually happened was that there had been growing political disagreements and unresolved issues between Commissioner Ize and Temple for some time,’ one witness said. ‘Both camps took advantage of the meeting to test their strength. It became a free-for-all fight between supporters of both sides.’
Commissioner Ize, reacting to the incident, denied any involvement, insisting he was nowhere near the scene when the clash occurred.

Who Is Tempo Mudi?
Aside from his government role, Mudi is a well-known political aide and public figure in Delta State politics. He recently attracted attention for an unrelated reason when popular digital creator Peller joked on social media that Mudi had promised him ten cows ahead of his upcoming wedding but could not deliver immediately because he was still recovering from the attack. The comment circulated widely and briefly made Mudi a trending topic for reasons far removed from the violence.
The Broader Context
The incident has reignited debate over political tolerance and free expression in the state. Several commentators, regardless of their views on the trigger, stated that citizens should be free to voice political opinions without fear of violence. ‘People should be free to express their opinions, even when those opinions involve praising what many would argue is the worst government in the history of our democracy,’ one observer said. ‘Freedom of expression doesn’t cease to exist simply because we find someone’s views outrageous.’
The attack also underscores rising tensions over political discourse in Delta, a PDP-controlled state where APC seeks to expand its footprint in future elections. The beating up of a government protocol officer at an APC meeting, with multiple explanations and no arrests made, reveals the complex relationship of politics, allegations of cult activities and the fragility of civil discourse in the state.
