Ibrahim Mbaya was 25 years old, a graduate of the University of Jos, and one of the Top 30 finalists for Mr and Miss Glam Nigeria. His friends knew him as Ibee, and he had a modelling and fashion career that was just beginning to develop. Last Sunday, he was allegedly beaten to death by a group of youths over an accusation of phone theft in Jos, Plateau State.
Three individuals have since been detained, and more are being sought.
What Happened
Mbaya had come to Jos to resolve an academic matter. He attended an event and, because it was late, stayed the night at a friend’s apartment off-campus behind City of David along Ring Road. 
The next morning, the friend allegedly discovered that an iPhone was missing from the room. Mbaya was named the primary suspect; he was described as the only other person present in the room at the time. He reportedly stepped out at some point but later returned after being asked to clarify the situation.
What happened next, according to witnesses, wasn’t a conversation.
On his return, he was allegedly surrounded by the friend and other youths and beaten with sticks and other objects for hours in what appeared to be a prolonged attempt to extract a confession, and he eventually collapsed.
According to the Plateau State Police Command, Mbaya was brought to the Jos University Teaching Hospital on July 26 by some youths. He was unconscious on arrival and was confirmed dead shortly after.
The Arrests
Three suspects have been detained in connection with what police are treating as culpable homicide: Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji. One of them was reportedly captured in a viral video striking the victim with a large wooden plank. Authorities have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down other individuals who fled the scene.
What Was Found
Hours after the attack, the iPhone that reportedly triggered the beating was found. Authorities couldn’t link Ibrahim Mbaya to the theft.
The Plateau State Police Command also highlighted the core issue: a phone was reported missing, and a man was killed before any investigation took place, before any evidence was gathered, and before any authority was involved.

The Condemnation
The killing has received swift and widespread condemnation.
Former NANS Acting President Prince Miaphen described the incident as “barbaric and unacceptable” and called for a full investigation. The National Association of Nigerian Students condemned it as “heartbreaking” and demanded a thorough and transparent inquiry.
The Plateau State Police Command reaffirmed its stance against jungle justice, warning that anyone who takes the law into their own hands will face prosecution under the full weight of the law.

Who He Was
Beyond the circumstances of his death, Ibrahim Mbaya deserves to be remembered as more than a victim.
He was a young creative who was establishing a presence in the modelling and fashion industry in Jos. Just days before his death, organisers of Mr and Miss Glam Nigeria announced him as one of the competition’s Top 30 finalists; a recognition that came through his talent and ambition.
