Pope Leo XIV has thanked those who prayed for him following his lung cancer surgery, saying he greatly appreciates their support.
The Vatican provided an update on his recovery on Wednesday, October 14, when organisers read the Pope’s message at the conclusion of the conference 10 Years After Amoris Laetitia. In his written message, the Pope said:
“As you know, I have been unable to be among you during these days. I thank you warmly for your prayers and for the work you have done together. Your sharing of experiences and attentive listening are indeed a gift to the whole Church. I am especially grateful to the families who have spoken of their joys, struggles and hopes.”
The Vatican confirmed on Wednesday that Leo was “progressing as expected” and had enjoyed a calm night in hospital.
During a 90-minute procedure on Tuesday, doctors at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome removed the entire lower lobe of Leo’s right lung. The human right lung has three lobes. The surgeon reported that the operation went well.

According to the Vatican, pre-operative tests identified adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer, and doctors confirmed the diagnosis during surgery.
Leo is expected to remain in hospital for about a week. The Vatican has cleared his schedule until 20 October.
Pope Leo XIV Announces Surgery on X
Earlier this week, Pope Leo informed the public about his planned surgery in a post on X. He wrote:
“Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.”
