Amaka, also known as Amy, took to the internet in an emotional video that has touched hearts across social media. She explained how her friend, who abandoned her three-month-old child, has now come to demand him back after eight years of Amy single-handedly providing love and care.

In 2018, the friend visited her at her house with her baby, making it seem like a usual visit. She then stepped out, claiming she wanted to briefly get something. After hours of not seeing her, Amy got worried and alerted her mother, who suggested taking the baby to the friend’s house

Upon getting to the house, they found the child’s grandmother seated in front of it. The woman refused to take her grandson in, insisting they wait for his mother to come back for him. Despite pleas from Amaka and her mother, she wouldn’t budge; so, they left with the baby, whom Amy now affectionately calls Pom Pom.

At the time, Amy’s family owned a provision store, so feeding Pom Pom wasn’t too difficult. However, days turned into a week, and then they realized the mother wasn’t coming back. From then on, Amy and her mother took full responsibility for raising him after failed attempts to return him to his grandmother.

They had several sleepless nights filled with the cries of a child that wasn’t biologically theirs. Still, they cared for him like he was their own.

Amy was waiting for admission into the university at the time; hence, juggling her mother’s provision store and taking care of the baby caused so much stress that they were pushed to enroll him in school early. At about nine months old, Pom Pom started school and was brought up like any other child with biological parents. Meanwhile, no member of his biological family reached out. His mother never showed up; they were on their own while raising Pom Pom.

Years quietly went by. Then, when Pom Pom was seven and won a competition, his biological grandmother finally appeared. She thanked Amy and her mother for all the care they had given her grandson, then asked to take back the boy. When Amy and her mother gently declined her request, calling it inhumane, she began to make a fuss. Soon after, Pom Pom’s biological mother joined in making custody demands.

After much back-and-forth, and then a meeting involving both families, Amy says her family was given two conditions if they wanted to keep Pom Pom: marry the child’s mother into the family, and let him bear her surname. Amy felt the conditions were not worth it.

In a heartfelt note suggesting defeat, Amy wrote on TikTok, accompanied by old pictures of her with Pom Pom:

“My darling Pom Pom. With tears in my eyes, I am writing this because one day you will hear or know the story. Not out of abandonment but out of love, peace, and for your own good too. If this is the way we go our separate ways and it is God’s will, then it’s fine. I really hope they give you love and peace just like you’ve always gotten from us… I now count the days to let go of you (not asking for compensation because what I did for you was all love), and nothing will change the fact that you’re my SON, come rain, come shine. I will always be your mother from far or near. Love you so so much. Xoxo, MAMA.”

Nigerians online have suggested different solutions as they sympathise with her. Many are asking her not to give up on Pom Pom but instead to get a good lawyer and sue his biological grandmother and mother. Some have also asked her to legally adopt Pom Pom, while a few people have asked her to let go so that she does not endanger her life and that of her family.
