Mike Henry is the CEO and Executive Director of BHP Group Limited. He was appointed CEO of the mining company on January 1 2020.
Henry joined BHP, one of the world’s largest mining companies, in 2003 after working in the resources industry in Canada, Japan, and Australia. He rose through the ranks, became a member of BHP’s Executive Leadership Team in 2011, and served as President of Operations for Minerals Australia.
BHP is a giant Australian mining company, but it has big operations in Southern Africa (like manganese and nickel mines).
That’s why Mike Henry (its CEO) often shows up in “highest-paid CEOs in Africa” or South Africa lists, even though the company is headquartered in Australia.

Compensation
Henry has a base salary of around $1.9 million USD. This means that most of his money comes from bonuses, stock awards, and performance incentives. Therefore, he earns way more if BHP hits big targets on production and profits.
For instance, in 2025 (year to June 2025), he earned about $8.5 million in total (22% salary + 78% bonuses/stocks, which is up to 16% from the year before).
In 2024, he earned about $7.3 million in total. So, his pay depends heavily on how well BHP does.
In South African Rand, some reports show even higher figures (over R258 million in certain years) because of big long-term incentive payouts when the company performs well.
Background and Career
Henry was born in 1966 in Canada and holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia.
He has garnered over 30 years of experience in the global mining and resources sector, across operations, commercial roles, safety, technology, and marketing.
However, as of early 2026, BHP announced that Brandon Craig would succeed him as CEO. Henry has led the company through strong commodity cycles, record copper and iron ore production in FY2025, and a strategic emphasis on future-facing metals like copper.
Personal Life & Family
Mike Henry keeps his personal life away from the public eye. He rarely shares much on social media or in interviews.
Henry married his now ex-wife shortly after he graduated University of British Columbia. He was teaching English in Japan when they met and were married for 30 years before their separation around 2021.
The union produced two adult daughters who live in Canada.
Since late 2023, he’s been in a relationship with Tracy Robinson, who is also the CEO of Canadian National Railway.
Rich men have hobbies too. To chill from his stressful job, he plays the guitar (even if not perfectly) and studies history.
