Who’s the richest CEO in Nigeria?

Roger Thompson Brown is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Director of Seplat Energy Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading indigenous oil and gas exploration and production companies. He is regarded as the highest-earning CEO of a Nigerian-listed company. Brown is a British national who has held senior roles in Nigeria’s energy sector for over a decade.

Compensation and Recognition

Brown has consistently been ranked among Nigeria’s highest-paid CEOs. In 2024, his total compensation was reported as approximately ₦3.9 billion annually and ₦325 million monthly. Reports from Simply Wall St for 2025 cite even higher figures, including salary, bonuses, and stock options, placing his total yearly compensation at about $8.32 million.

He was recognized by BusinessDay Media as one of the “Top 25 CEOs on the Nigerian Exchange” for the 2024 financial year.

Career

Before Brown joined Seplat, he served as the Managing Director of Oil and Gas for EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) at Standard Bank Group from 2001 to 2013. He joined Seplat Energy (then Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc) in July 2013 as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Executive Director. On August 1, 2020, he was appointed CEO.

As CFO, he was a trailblazer. He helped make history by leading Seplat’s dual listing on both the Nigerian (NGX) and London stock markets—the first Nigerian company to achieve this.

He has spearheaded major business deals, including company mergers and acquisitions.

Brown is known for raising capital through debt and equity and acquiring key assets, which helped Seplat expand its oil and gas operations in Nigeria.

As CEO, he has pushed for the adoption of new technology, sustainable business practices, and energy security through local production.

He frequently speaks at industry events, highlighting how Nigerian companies can help the country become more energy-independent and transition to cleaner energy. Brown also serves or has served on related boards, including as a director of Eland Oil & Gas Ltd. and Seplat Energy UK Ltd.

Background and Education

Brown earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Dundee (Scotland) in 1992 and a graduate degree from the University of Ulster in 1993. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and a member of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN). He has more than 25 years of experience in finance, with a focus on emerging markets, energy, and infrastructure transactions across Africa.
