Tension is quietly building between Kenya and Russia following reports that more than 1,000 Kenyans may have been recruited to fight in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

International news outlets like Reuters and Al Jazeera report that Kenya’s National Intelligence Service has raised concerns that many young Kenyan men were tricked into going to Russia with promises of good jobs, only to end up fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war.

The reports sparked protests in Nairobi, where families showed up with photos of their sons, calling on the government to step in and help. Many say their relatives travelled on what they believed were legitimate work opportunities and are now either unreachable or reportedly deployed to the front lines.

However, the Russian Embassy in Kenya has strongly denied any illegal recruitment. Russian officials insist they do not forcibly enlist foreigners and say any foreign nationals serving in the military do so voluntarily and within Russian law.

“The govt. authorities of Russia have never engaged in illegal recruitment of Kenyan citizens in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” a statement released by the embassy in response to the protest said.

Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since indicated it is engaging Russian authorities diplomatically. Kenya’s Foreign Minister is expected to hold talks in Moscow to seek clarification and ensure the protection of Kenyan citizens.

What Happens Next?

Foreign affairs experts are suggesting that the Kenyan government ask for transparency and verification of how its citizens ended up in the war, seek access to any Kenyans currently in Russia, and demand the safe return of those who may have been misled.

Russia, on its part, maintains that it has not violated any laws and denies claims of forced recruitment.

“It must be understood that the legislation of the Russian Federation does not preclude citizens of foreign countries from voluntarily enlisting in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation if they stay in Russia on a legal basis…”

For now, the issue remains under investigation, with both governments presenting different sides of the story.
