The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a public notice warning Nigerians about a fraudulent document circulating online.

The fake INEC notice claims to be a special announcement from the commission. It states problems affecting the list of governorship candidates in six states: Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe, and Kano.

INEC has categorically stated that the document did not originate from the commission and is completely false.

What the Fake INEC Notice Claims

The circulating material looks like an official INEC notice. It carries the commission’s logo and letterhead with the title: “Special Announcement.”

The letter suggests issues with governorship candidates in the six named states. Also, it claims there will be a further update on Monday, while advising the public to remain calm while awaiting an official statement.

INEC has now overlaid the document with a large red “FAKE” stamp in its official post on X to make the status unmistakably clear.

INEC’s Official Position

In its statement released on Monday, October 12, 2026, the Commission said:

“The commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC. INEC therefore urges members of the public to disregard the fraudulent publication and refrain from sharing it.”

The electoral body stressed that any information suggesting it has issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in those states is false.

This fake INEC notice comes after the commission publicly announced that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters had risen to over 103 million. The increase follows the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise and final biometric cleanup.

The commission also commenced nationwide Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection, as well as the public display of the voter register from Friday, 9 October 2026.
