Hilda Baci Named Guinness World Records ICON; A Title Held by Only 1 Other African

Breaking a record makes you a record holder, but leaving a mark that outlasts the record itself makes you an icon.

There is a difference between holding a Guinness World Record and being named a Guinness World Records ICON. Anyone with enough determination, the right conditions, and a bit of luck can break a record. The ICONS designation is something else entirely; it is a special recognition reserved for individuals whose achievements and influence have left a lasting impact and inspired people well beyond the moment the record was set.

It is, by design, an exclusive list. The number of Africans on it is small enough that each name carries real weight. Do you recognise any of them?

No one starts culinary trends quite like Hilda Baci. Chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, known worldwide as Hilda Baci, hails from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. She developed her passion for cooking as a young girl, helping her mother in the kitchen. That early love for food eventually grew into something far bigger than anyone could have imagined.

She first captured global attention in May 2023 when she embarked on a historic cooking marathon in Lagos, attempting to break the Guinness World Records title for the longest cooking marathon by an individual. She broke the record, cooking continuously for 93 hours and 11 minutes. The achievement generated widespread attention across social media and inspired a wave of record-breaking attempts across Nigeria and other African countries.

She later lost that specific record to Irish chef Alan Fisher, but that did not slow her down. She later partnered with Gino Nigeria to set another record for the largest serving of rice (jollof rice), weighing 8,780 kilograms and shared in more than 16,600 portions.

Icons Status and Impact

The Nigerian chef was inducted as a GWR Icon in 2026. Guinness World Records named her a GWR Icon, recognising her impact on global record-breaking culture and her role in inspiring a wave of record attempts in Nigeria. She became the first Nigerian to receive the GWR Icon recognition.

“The truth is that this recognition means a lot to me. Not because of the title itself, but because of everything it represents: the journey, the sacrifices, the lessons, the growth, and the countless people who made it possible.”

She was also recognised as Young Person of the Year at The Future Awards Africa in 2023, another reminder that her impact has always stretched well beyond the kitchen.

Known affectionately as “The Philosopher”, Eliud Kipchoge made history in 2018 when he broke the marathon world record at the BMW Berlin Marathon. But it is what came afterward that truly defines his place among the ICONS.

Kipchoge is a two-time Olympic champion, a five-time Berlin Marathon winner, and a four-time London Marathon winner. He first broke the men’s marathon world record in 2018 in Berlin, and he broke it again in 2022.

In 2019, he became the first person in recorded history to run 26.2 miles in under two hours, clocking a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 40 seconds at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria. Technical arrangements around the attempt meant it could not be ratified as an official marathon world record, but that has done nothing to diminish what he achieved. He broke a barrier that had been considered physically impossible for years. To this day, no one else has managed to breach it.

The Kenyan long-distance runner was inducted as a GWR Icon in 2024, with notable records including the first marathon distance run under two hours, the most wins of the London Marathon by a male individual, and the fastest time to run the Berlin Marathon by a male athlete.

Why This List Matters

What links Hilda Baci and Eliud Kipchoge is not simply the records themselves. It is what happened after the records were set: the thousands of Nigerians who attempted their own Guinness World Records following Hilda’s cookathon and the runners worldwide who now believe the two-hour marathon barrier was always meant to fall.

Other notable African record holders continue to emerge across the continent, from Kenyan Olympic legends like David Rudisha and Faith Kipyegon to figures like Kimani Maruge, who enrolled in primary school at age 84 and became a global symbol of the universal right to education. The ICONS list remains small, but Africa’s presence within it continues to grow, one extraordinary, barrier-breaking achievement at a time.
