Last week, we spoke about how out of a population of well over 200 million people, only 2.4% earn over ₦200,000 monthly. How is that? What do they do differently?

According to reports from the Nigerian Financial Services Market (NFSM), only 2.4% of Nigerians working formally and informally earn over ₦200,000. The chart also shows that over 66% earn ₦50,000 or less monthly. And 17.1% are unemployed.

To put this in context, imagine any 10 Nigerians.

  • 1 or 2 are totally unemployed.
  • 6 are working but earn ₦50,000 or less monthly.
  • At most, only 2 or 3 of them earn ₦200,000 a month.

You can apply this same analogy to your friend group or people in your office.

To move from the unemployed group or those earning less than ₦50,000, you need to know what those earning above ₦200,000 monthly do. It can help you decide what skills to learn and industries and careers to pivot to.

This 2.4% of Nigerians earning above ₦200,000 do not get there by luck or by being smarter. They only manage to position themselves differently through their skills, access, industry, and income structure. Most of them don’t rely on a single salary stream, and many of them earn beyond Nigeria’s borders.

While most Nigerians get trapped in fixed-income structures, the 2.4% operate in leverage-based income systems that allow them to grow.

That’s the real difference.
