Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new set of ambassador-designates and high commissions.
The last full ambassadorial appointments were made in 2020 by the late President Muhammadu Buhari. In 2023, Tinubu recalled all Nigerian ambassadors worldwide, which left many diplomatic missions without permanent envoys.
Therefore, appointments mark a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s international relations and advancing its foreign policy priorities.
The newly approved ambassadors, which include a mix of 31 non-career ambassadors and 34 career diplomats, are expected to represent Nigeria in key countries across Africa, Europe, and the Americas, as well as at international organizations.
According to a statement issued by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun the necessary diplomatic procedures and induction programme for the ambassadors-designate and High Commissioners.
