Former Nigerian oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke (65) is facing corruption charges in the United Kingdom.

She is accused of accepting bribes in the form of luxury goods and high-end properties from industry figures seeking profitable oil and gas contracts.

She was minister for petroleum resources from 2010 to 2015 under President Goodluck Jonathan and was the first woman to hold that title and to lead the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

In 2023 she was charged with five counts of accepting bribes and a charge of conspiracy to commit bribery, which she denies.

The prosecutor of the case, Alexandra Healy, presented evidence at London’s Southwark Crown Court against Diezani, who allegedly enjoyed a lavish lifestyle in London due to benefits from people connected to the Nigerian oil industry.

Healy stated that her acceptance of luxury goods and services from these individuals was deemed improper, as it created a conflict of interest.

Alison-Madueke faces various allegations, including the use of a chauffeur-driven car and a private jet.

Her son’s school fees were reportedly covered by businessman Benedict Peters, who, although named in the indictment, is not on trial.

Another Nigerian businessman, Kolawole Aluko, spent over £2 million at Harrods on items for Alison-Madueke and provided her with accommodation in a mansion valued at £3.25 million. Aluko also paid for associated expenses, including staff and renovations.

The court case also involves Olatimbo Ayinde, charged with bribery related to both Alison-Madueke and a former managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, to whom Ayinde allegedly paid a significant bribe after the political transition from Jonathan to Buhari in 2015 to facilitate job continuity for his associate at NNPC.

Doye Agama, Alison-Madueke’s brother, is charged with conspiracy to commit bribery and is participating in the proceedings via video for medical reasons. Both Ayinde and Agama deny all charges against them.

Healy told the jury that the hearing of bribery allegations against Nigerian officials in London is not as peculiar as it seems, as three of the defendants had connections to Britain.

Diezani is also known for using the oil wealth to buy luxury jewellery and bejewelled bras. Ultimately, this case underpins how corruption and bribery have totally eroded Nigeria’s oil wealth.
