If you followed the Africa Cup of Nations last year, you know the name Amadu Komba. The Sierra Leonean football analyst correctly predicted all 15 matches he covered during the tournament, earning a reputation that has followed him into this World Cup. He has since released his Round of 32 predictions on Facebook, and he is already off to a strong start, having correctly called South Africa’s elimination at the hands of Canada.

Here is what he is predicting for the rest of the knockout stage:

1. Brazil  vs Japan

Komba sees a tight contest with limited chances for both teams, ending in a Brazil win in regulation time. Japan, he says, will be eliminated. Brazil has historically been dominant against Asian opposition at World Cups and will be favourites to advance.

2. Germany vs Paraguay

A comfortable German victory in regulation time, with no need for extra time. Paraguay, the South American side that qualified as one of the best third-placed teams, will exit without posing a threat to one of the tournament’s stronger favourites.

3. Netherlands vs Morocco

This is one of the most interesting predictions. Komba expects the Dutch to be held to a draw across 90 minutes and through extra time, with Morocco ultimately advancing on penalties. For African football fans, this would be one of the tournament’s most memorable results, as the Atlas Lions go deep once again, echoing their remarkable run to the semi-finals at Qatar 2022.

4. Ivory Coast vs Norway

He admits this is his most difficult prediction. His assessment is that Norway will edge it in extra time, eliminating the Elephants in a tight, end-to-end game. Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard present a formidable front, and Komba believes they will be too much for Ivory Coast across the full 120 minutes.

5. France vs Sweden

A comfortable French victory in regulation time, with no drama. Sweden, which impressed in the group stage, will struggle against the quality of a Kylian Mbappé-led France team at full strength.

6. México vs Ecuador

The co-hosts will advance, but not easily. Komba expects a draw in regulation before Mexico wins it in extra time. Playing in front of a home crowd will be a significant advantage for El Tri, who will feed off the energy of Mexican fans filling their stadiums.

7. England vs DR Congo

England will progress in regulation with a low-scoring win. He does not foresee this going to extra time. DR Congo, which impressed with five points in a group containing England and Portugal, will exit – but having established itself as a genuine continental force.

8. Belgium vs Senegal

His most thrilling African prediction. Komba calls this one a match full of surprises — going to extra time, then penalties, with the Lions of Teranga emerging victorious. It would be a huge achievement for Senegal, who limped into the Round of 32 after needing a 5-0 win over Iraq to make it through the group stage.

9. USA vs Bosnia and Herzegovina

A straightforward home victory for the United States in regulation time. Playing in front of their fans, the US will deliver what Komba describes as their best performance of the tournament. Bosnia will be eliminated.

10. Spain vs Austria

Spain will advance without conceding, but Komba emphasises this will not be easy. The Austrians will make it a tight challenge. Spain’s technical superiority will eventually tell, and they will progress with a clean sheet.

11. Portugal vs Croatia

He describes this as a heartbreaking end for Croatia. Luka Modrić and his teammates will put in a strong performance, but Portugal will win in extra time thanks to their superior squad depth. This could be the final World Cup match for one of the greatest midfielders the game has seen.

12. Switzerland vs Algeria

Despite a commendable effort from the Desert Warriors, Switzerland’s attacking fluidity proves too much. Komba sees a straightforward Swiss victory in regulation. Algeria, which narrowly progressed with a dramatic 3-3 draw against Austria, will exit at the first knockout stage.

13. Australia vs Egypt

One of the closest predictions. Komba sees this going all the way, through extra time and possibly penalties, before Egypt prevails. A Mohamed Salah-inspired Egyptian side advances, while Australia exits painfully from a match they could have won.

The defending champions easily beat the tournament debutants with a comfortable victory in regulation. Cape Verde’s journey — one of the most inspiring stories of this World Cup — comes to an end. But Komba, like many others, has great respect for Vozinha’s achievements.

15. Colombia vs Ghana

Ghana defends well but ultimately cannot contain Colombia’s quality. Komba predicts a draw in regulation, with Colombia advancing in extra time. The Black Stars exit, but they leave with credit for a hard-fought effort. performance.
