A warning about chemicals in sanitary pads has been circulating online, raising questions about what menstrual products contain and whether women should be concerned.
This questions began when Dr Aniekwe Donald known as the The Tall Nigerian Doctor called out Nigerian regulatory bodies demanding transparency, accountability and better standards. He criticized the agencies for a lack of proper regulation, questioning the safety limits and pushing for women to have full disclosure of the chemical contents in the products they use.
Recent research has detected several chemicals in sanitary products, including phthalates, bisphenols and parabens. 
A 2026 study of sanitary pads and panty liners in South Africa detected at least two of the targeted endocrine disrupting chemicals in every product tested.
Another 2026 study screened disposable sanitary pads and other personal hygiene products for 92 chemicals. Researchers detected phthalates and other chemical additives, noting that skin contact with sanitary pads can provide a route of exposure to some substances.
These findings have raised concerns because some of the chemicals studied can interfere with hormonal systems.
However, detecting a chemical in a menstrual product does not automatically mean that using the product will cause certain illness or reactions.
The available research does not establish that all sanitary pads are unsafe or that women should stop using disposable pads.
The concern is instead about the chemicals that may be present, the level of exposure and their possible long term effects.
What chemicals should women watch for?
Women should watch of for phthalates, bisphenols, parabens.
Phthalates are used in various consumer products and have been detected in some feminine hygiene products. Some phthalates have been studied for their potential effects on the reproductive and endocrine systems.
Bisphenols, including BPA, are another group of chemicals researchers have investigated because of their hormonal activity.
Parabens are preservatives used in many personal care products. Researchers have also detected them in menstrual products.
Fragrance is another thing to watch out for. Scented menstrual products can contain additional fragrance ingredients, and some people may experience skin irritation or sensitivity from them.

What can women use instead?
Women who want to reduce unnecessary exposure can choose unscented pads, 100% cotton pads, tampons, menstrual and products that provide clear information about their materials.
Reusable cloth pads and period underwear are also another option for those who prefer reusable products.. Menstrual cups and discs also collect menstrual blood rather than absorbing it.
There is no single menstrual product that works for everyone. Comfort, cost, access and personal preference all matter.
Regardless of the product used, good hygiene remains important.
The US Food and Drug Administration advises users to change menstrual products regularly and seek medical attention if they experience unusual pain, fever or other symptoms.
For now, the research supports paying attention to what menstrual products contain without assuming that every sanitary pad is dangerous.
