Veteran Nigerian filmmaker Olu Jacobs dies at 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and filmmaker Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his passing on social media on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

The respected actor died on Wednesday, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Nigerian theatre, television and film.

Olusoji described his father as “The Lion of Lufodo” while announcing the family’s loss.

Family Announces His Passing

In his tribute, Olusoji expressed gratitude to God for his father’s life and legacy.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle,” he wrote.

He also appealed to the media and members of the public to respect the family’s privacy.

“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” he added.

A Career Spanning Decades

Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs developed an interest in acting during his childhood in Kano.

He was inspired after watching Hubert Ogunde’s annual concert parties at the Colonial Hotel.

That experience strengthened his passion for the stage. He later travelled to England, where he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Jacobs subsequently appeared in several British television series and international productions. He later returned to Nigeria and became one of Nollywood’s most respected actors.

Marriage to Joke Silva

Olu Jacobs was married to veteran actress Joke Silva. The couple built a respected partnership that spanned both family life and the entertainment industry. They also worked together through their theatre and film ventures, including the Lufodo Group.

Jacobs’ death marks the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most recognisable acting figures.

His decades-long career earned him major recognition across Nigeria and beyond, while his influence extended across theatre, television and film.
