Chief Tajudeen Owoyemi, the man behind Radisson Blu Lagos, Radisson Hotel Ikeja, Park Inn by Radisson Victoria Island and Avalon Hotel, Offa, is one of Nigeria’s most accomplished hoteliers. Yet his journey to wealth was built on enterprise, not inheritance.
A member of the Olugbense Ruling House of Offa in Offa, Kwara State, Owoyemi was born in the town. He studied Civil Engineering, earning a National Diploma before establishing Tajudeen Owoyemi & Co. Ltd. in 1978.
The company steadily grew into a major construction firm, executing projects for the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Nigerian Communications Commission and several other government institutions.
Many entrepreneurs would have been satisfied with success in construction. Owoyemi chose a different path. He diversified into hospitality, establishing Avalon Intercontinental Nigeria Limited, the company behind some of Nigeria’s best-known hotels. Today, his portfolio includes Radisson Blu Lagos, Radisson Hotel Ikeja, Park Inn by Radisson Victoria Island and Avalon Hotel, Offa. He is also developing the Radisson Collection Hotel & Conference Centre, Abuja.
His influence extends beyond hotel ownership. Owoyemi was among the pioneers of internationally branded hotels in Nigeria, introducing the country’s first Protea Hotel franchise at a time when global hospitality brands had only a modest presence in the market.
That pioneering move helped redefine Nigeria’s hospitality industry, proving that indigenous entrepreneurs could build successful partnerships with some of the world’s leading hotel brands.
Today, Owoyemi ranks among Nigeria’s most influential hotel investors. Perhaps the most compelling part of his story is not the luxury hotels, the wealth or the business empire. It is that everything began from the ground up. In a country where many young people are tempted by the promise of overnight success, his journey is a reminder that expertise, persistence, calculated risk-taking and the willingness to reinvent oneself can build an enduring legacy.
