Before Monday, most people had never heard of Vozinha. He had roughly 50,000 Instagram followers before the Spain match and was not on any shortlist of players to watch at this World Cup. He was simply a 40-year-old goalkeeper from a small Atlantic archipelago, standing between the posts in his country’s first-ever World Cup game, against the reigning European champions.

By the time the final whistle blew in Atlanta, the world knew exactly who he was.

The Name That Followed Him Everywhere

Vozinha was born in Mindelo, a town of around 70,000 people on the island of São Vicente. His real name is Josimar Dias. His father wanted to name him Valdano, after Argentine striker Jorge Valdano of Real Madrid, but the authorities would not allow it.

He grew up raised by his grandparents while his father served in the military and his mother worked. In Cape Verdean Creole, Vozinha loosely translates to Little Voice. He did not love the name when he was young, but it followed him through the dusty streets of Mindelo, across every pitch, and through every country he moved to. Eventually, it became the only name that felt like home.

A Career Built in Obscurity

Vozinha did not turn professional until he was 25, making his debut for local side Batuque in 2007, the same year Spain star Lamine Yamal was born. He went on to play for clubs in Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, and Slovakia, accumulating at least 200 games across six countries, though statistics providers have not tracked all of his appearances. His only career trophy was the 2018-19 Cypriot Cup with AEL Limassol.

He first represented Cape Verde in 2012, going on to captain the team and play in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. Cape Verde qualified for this World Cup under coach Bubista, coming through the African qualifiers with seven wins, two draws, and one defeat, avoiding the inter-confederation playoffs altogether.

The Day Everything Changed

Spain had 27 shots over 90 minutes. Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, and Nico Williams all came off the bench, but nothing got past him. In the 39th minute, Vozinha dove to block Ferran Torres, saw the ball hit the crossbar, then sprang up to stop Mikel Oyarzabal’s rebound header. Before half-time, he also denied Pedri and Aymeric Laporte during a frantic stretch.

Seven saves, a clean sheet, Man of the Match. Spain 0, Cape Verde 0. Cape Verde became only the seventh team in World Cup history to avoid defeat on debut, and according to Opta, Vozinha became the oldest player ever to appear in a nation’s first World Cup match.

The Tears After the Whistle

When the final whistle blew, Vozinha broke down on the pitch. At the microphone, after receiving the MOTM award, he didn’t talk about saves or tactics. Instead, he gave an emotional speech.

“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents, and, unfortunately, they were not here. They died a few years earlier, and they did everything for me and my life,” he said. “Also, my mum didn’t manage to be here because of the visa. The money for the visa, we didn’t get on time.”

He ended with, “I would tell 18-year-old Vozinha to be really proud of himself. He worked a lot. We work in life to have moments like this. I am 40 now, but I wasn’t a professional until I was 25. This is a reward for all this journey.”

Within hours of the final whistle, his Instagram following surged from 50,000 to nearly 2 million and now stands at 8 million.

What’s Next for Cape Verde?

Cape Verde has earned one point from their opening match, and a goalless draw against the world’s No. 2 team is a solid start.

They will face Uruguay next, then Saudi Arabia. The path to the knockout stage is slim but still possible: one win, one draw, or even a surprising upset. The group remains open, and the dream is alive. With the tournament still in its early stages, we’ll soon see if it can continue.
