Monica Oma Owunaka, known to millions as Monique Pearls, died at 30 years old. The Abuja-based TikTok creator built a following through emotional videos about motherhood and family life. Her content often featured a young girl named Precious, a child her family brought from the village.
The bond between Monique and Precious became a central theme of her storytelling. Followers admired the warmth and authenticity of their relationship, but behind the camera, a different story was unfolding.
The Village Controversy
Monique wanted to adopt Precious. She had grown close to the child and wanted to give her a stable home. Precious’ biological parents, still living in the village, did not agree. They demanded the return of their daughter.
According to close sources, the father of Precious was especially angry. He reportedly threatened to take “diabolical” action against Monique if she did not return the child.
Monique eventually complied. She sent Precious back to the village.
The Death That Raised Suspicions

Weeks after returning the child, Monique fell ill. A close friend alleged that she died of malaria.
For many Nigerians, that explanation does not sit well. Malaria kills thousands every year. But in this context—given the threats made by Precious’ father—the timing feels too convenient.
Social media users have been vocal in their suspicions. One commenter wrote: “I remember her saying the little girl she was living with, her family members threatened her, so she decided to send her back. Later she said things are good and she might be joining them soon. Oh God what went wrong? She was a healthy soul”.
Another asked: “Please is this the woman that helped a small girl from the village that they took her back? Because I don’t know if I’m dreaming”.
What We Know and What We Don’t
Monique’s family confirmed her death in an emotional statement posted on her Instagram page. They described her as a “beautiful soul” whose “love, kindness, strength, and presence touched so many lives”. She left behind a husband and a young son named Lael.
However, what the family did not disclose was the cause of death. No official medical report has been released, there has been no confirmation of malaria, and no autopsy has been announced.
As of the time of this publication, no evidence exists to prove spiritual foul play. The father’s alleged threat remains just an allegation, and Precious’s parents have not publicly responded to the accusations.

The Bottom Line
A young woman is dead, a child was returned to her village, and a father allegedly made a threat. Weeks later, Monique Pearls was gone. If there’s anything the internet loves, it’s a good conspiracy theory, and right now, they are running with this story; but it’s more fiction than fact.
