Genevieve Nnaji has officially joined the cast of BBC’s upcoming six-part thriller series “Wahala”.

After almost seven years away from our screens, she’s making a powerful international comeback. Seeing our stories told on a big platform like BBC, with authentic voices behind it, feels personal. It’s entertainment and representation for us. It shows that our culture, our language, and our experiences matter on the global stage.

What’s “Wahala” All About?

“Wahala” is the Pidgin word for trouble. The story is about four Nigerian-British women in their thirties living in London. These friends have been navigating life. They’ve been mixing jollof rice with roast dinners, dealing with careers, and relationships.

They have had to deal with family expectations and that constant push-pull between their Nigerian roots and British reality. Everything seems cool until secrets from the past and some messy present-day choices start shaking their friendship to the core.

It’s full of drama, suspense, and identity struggles. It’s about privilege and real talk about friendship.

Wahala is adapted from Nikki May’s bestselling novel by Theresa Ikoko, and filming started on May 12, 2026.

The six-part thriller series is a female-led ensemble, including:

  • Cush Jumbo
  • Adelayo Adedayo
  • Susan Wokoma
  • Deborah Ayorinde (playing the intriguing newcomer, Isobel)
  • And of course, Genevieve Nnaji in a supporting role

This mix of British and Nigerian talent is about to give us everything we didn’t know we needed.

As reported by BBC, Genevieve Nnaji says: “I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Genevieve Nnaji is a Nigerian actress, producer, and director. She began acting as a child and became a household name in the early 2000s with hit films like Ije, Half of a Yellow Sun, The Figurine, and Blood Sisters.

Known for her natural talent and elegance, she has won several major awards, including AMVCAs and AMAA. In 2018, she made history by directing Lionheart — the first Nigerian film bought by Netflix.

We don’t have an exact release date yet, but it’s expected to be released on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and be streamed in other parts of the world too. We can’t wait to have Genevieve Nnaji in the BBC Wahala series on our screens.
