Seun Kuti has recounted a childhood incident involving his parents, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Fehintola Kuti, during the Afrobeat legend’s detention.
In a recent interview, Seun revealed that authorities held Fela at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Lagos.
Seun said his mother gave him bread and asked him to hand it to his father when they arrived at the detention facility.
He said he did not know he carried contraband for his father.
Unaware of what his mother had hidden in the bread, he said he gave it to Fela without suspicion.
“We were going to visit my father in Panti, and my mum bought bread to give to him. She hid ‘Igbo’ inside the bread and asked me to hand it over when we got there,” he said.

“Bear in mind, I was about eight or nine years old. My parents were such gangsters, man! I didn’t even know what was going on. I just got there and gave the bread to my dad.
“On our way home, my sister asked if I knew there was Igbo in the bread. My mum had told her, but she did not tell me because she knew I might have said something to the police.”
Seun also said he visited his father in several detention facilities during his childhood.
“I saw my father in several places. I remember visiting him in Ikoyi Prison, Kirikiri Prison, Panti, and Alagbon,” he said.
Seun Kuti’s account adds more detail to the personal life of Fela Kuti during his years of detention, while also showing the experiences his family endured at that time.
