There are numerous reasons why so many African children do not receive an education, and they vary by country or region. However, the major issues boil down to economic, social, political, and cultural challenges.
Poverty is one of the most significant barriers. Even when school is technically free, families still face expenses such as uniforms, books, and transportation. For many low-income families, the additional costs make sending their children to school nearly impossible.
Having so many children out of school in Africa has serious consequences. Those who do not complete their education are more likely to remain in poverty, with fewer job opportunities as they get older.
Here are the countries with the most out-of-school children based on data from UNESCO.
1. South Sudan
South Sudan has Africa’s highest out-of-school rate, with 58% of its children not attending school. Conflict, displacement, and limited infrastructure continue to pose challenges to education access in the country.
2. Equatorial Guinea
Many children are excluded from formal learning opportunities due to economic inequality and low investment in educational facilities. 52% of children in Equatorial Guinea do not attend school.

3. Eritrea
Eritrea has a 45% dropout rate. Many families have struggled to access education due to economic constraints and restrictions on free movement.
4. Central African Republic
The Central African Republic has a 44% out-of-school rate. Many children have lost access to education as a result of ongoing instability and school destruction during conflicts.
