Ayra Starr is one of the biggest names in Afrobeats. The Grammy-nominated singer has millions of fans, global tours, and a fashion presence that turns heads. But beyond the music and the red carpets, there are sides to her that fans rarely see.
On a recent episode of the podcast Is This Seat Taken? Ayra Starr sat down and spoke openly about her personality, her music, and the parts of herself that fans rarely see. She talked about her childhood, her creative process, and the contradictions that make her who she is. Here are some facts you probably did not know about Ayra Starr.
1. She started with dance not music

Long before “Rush” and “Bloody Samaritan,” Ayra Starr was a dancer. She shared that she competed in the Maltina Dance All competition in Nigeria as a child. Her performance was to Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”, and she came second. The same energy that makes her performances electric today was already there, just on a different stage.
2. She Was a Prefect Who Was Always in Trouble
In secondary school, Ayra held not one but two leadership roles simultaneously: choir prefect and assembly prefect. She is still puzzled by how that happened.
“To be honest I didn’t even know how I got there. I was just faking it as I go. I don’t know how, I was literally always in trouble.”
A rebel who somehow became a leader. This contradiction has followed her into adulthood.
3. She is a Rebel by Nature

Conformity has never been her thing, and she has made peace with that.
“I’ve always been a rebel. I’ve never conformed, not once. And when I try to, that’s when something doesn’t add up. I’ve always been a weird little girl, and I still am.”
Friends describe her as a diva, stubborn, and occasionally rude. She does not entirely disagree. “I was kind of rude, but I had to be.”
4. She Needs Solitude to Function
Behind the bright personality is someone who genuinely requires significant alone time to reset. Despite the touring, the events, and the constant visibility, Ayra is surprisingly introverted in how she recharges.
“I’m very big on spending time alone. I kind of love the balance of isolation and, you know, living the life I live, I need to go back to myself.”
She has described spending one or two weeks in complete isolation just to reconnect with herself.
5. She Cannot Swim
One of the more unexpected facts: Ayra Starr, for all her fearlessness, cannot swim. She has said she wants to learn, but it has not happened yet.

6. One of Her Songs Was Written by Someone Else

Ayra Starr is known as a songwriter, but You’re Hired (fans favourite) was actually written by British singer-songwriter Raye. It is a reminder that the best artists know what to do with great material regardless of where it comes from.
7. She Is Stepping Into Acting

Music is not the only lane she is expanding into. Ayra has confirmed she will appear in the film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone, describing the experience of inhabiting a completely different character for months as one of the most stretching things she has ever done creatively. “It allowed me to be a whole different person for three months,” she said.
8. Her Artistic Vision is Unusually Clear
For someone still in the early years of what is already a significant career, Ayra has a remarkably precise sense of where she is going.
“I want my career to tell that I can and will always exist in multitudes, in different aspects, in different genres, and with different personalities.”
She also once staged a play that combined Adekunle Gold, Sade, and Story of My Life in the same piece. The range was always there. She is just giving it more room now.

9. She is a “Sabi Girl” Who Stays True to Her Roots
Ayra’s love for Nigerian culture remains constant, even when she is traveling the world. On tour, she had difficulty finding where to get yam and eggs, a classic Nigerian breakfast. When she finally tracked it down, she had to go wait at the lady’s house since she was cooking it from home. Once she got it, she said: “I was like blood of Jesus. I’m okay in Jesus name. Just give me my yam and eggs.”
10. Her Mother is the Foundation of Everything

Throughout interviews, Ayra speaks about her mother with a warmth that is impossible to miss. She credits her with building an environment where no dream was too big and no question was too much.
Her mother wanted her daughters to be “as free and expressive as possible,” encouraged them to ask questions constantly, and dreamed of Ayra having her own fashion brand and shop by the time she was sixteen. She once brought home a guitar with only two strings for her children to learn on, which is the kind of detail that tells you everything about where Ayra’s creative confidence came from.
The rebel, the prefect, the dancer, the introvert, the actress: all of it traces back somewhere to a mother who created space for it.
