Malawian President Peter Mutharika has announced a ban on the export of raw minerals, as Malawi moves to unlock the full potential of its rich mineral resources.

The president said the decision will stop companies from exporting raw minerals and instead push them to process resources locally.

By encouraging value addition within the country, the government hopes to strengthen local industries, create jobs, and ensure Malawi’s mineral wealth contributes more directly to national economic growth and prosperity.

Authorities will impose penalties, fines, and other sanctions on anyone who violates the order, in line with Malawi’s existing laws. However, the government allows companies to export minerals that have been processed, refined, or otherwise value-added within Malawi, provided they comply with the country’s mining regulations.

President Mutharika also stressed that officials will closely monitor the implementation of the policy. The ministry responsible for mining will submit regular reports to track progress and measure how the policy affects the economy, industry, and the environment.

Through this approach, the government hopes to ensure the ban delivers meaningful benefits for Malawi and supports long-term economic development.
