What Davido and Chris Brown’s Joint Project Really Means for the Future of Afrobeats

It’s bigger than a collaboration. It’s a statement.

The announcement came on the sidelines of one of music’s biggest stages. While performing at Coachella 2026, Davido sat down with Martell’s Swift Conversations and said what fans on two continents have been waiting years to hear: he and Chris Brown have an album coming. Not a single. Not a feature. A full joint album, expected at the end of 2027.

For anyone who has been following this friendship and creative partnership, it was not a surprise. However, hearing the confirmation, along with the actual timeline, still felt significant.

Their partnership dates back to 2019, when they paired up on the smash hit Blow My Mind, a lead single from Davido’s album A Good Time. Chris Brown returned the favour that same year, featuring Davido on Lower Body from his album Indigo.

In 2020, Davido called on Chris Brown and Young Thug for Shopping Spree, one of the standout singles on his album A Better Time. Two years later, the duo linked up again for Nobody Needs To Know on Chris Brown’s 2022 album Breezy.

Then came Sensational in 2023, featuring Nigerian star Lojay, which earned both Davido and Lojay their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and a nomination for Best African Song Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Their most recent collaboration, Hmm, appeared on Chris Brown’s 2024 album 11:11.

Six collaborations deep, across five years, and they have not missed once. By that point, the question was no longer whether they had the chemistry for a joint project. The question was simply when.

Speaking during the interview, Davido was honest about where his head is creatively right now. “The music I am making now is very African,” he said. “In this next project, I am working with a lot of my original producers from back home.”

It is a deliberate return to roots, a desire to anchor his sound more deeply in the African production that shaped him. But he was equally clear that international collaboration remains part of his identity. “I am still an American, so definitely there are going to be collaborations. Me and Chris Brown got an album coming out, hopefully at the end of next year.”

In previous interviews, Davido has spoken highly of his friendship with Chris Brown, describing him as one of the greatest performers alive and noting that the two already have enough songs recorded together to fill multiple albums.

This is not just exciting music news. It represents something larger about where Afrobeats stands in the global conversation right now. When Blow My Mind dropped in 2019, the idea of an African artist and an American superstar creating music as genuine equals was still relatively new territory. A full joint album in 2027 speaks to how much has changed since then.

Their catalogue shows they can do it all: Afrobeats party starters, R&B records, and pop crossovers. A full album gives them the space to explore every corner of that range without limits.

Before the joint album arrives, both artists have solo work dropping. Chris Brown has already announced May 10 as the release date for his 12th studio album, BROWN. Davido is currently on the European leg of his 5ive Alive Tour, with a solo project leaning heavily into African sounds also in the works.

Think of everything between now and late 2027 as the build-up. Two artists at the top of their game, moving toward something they have been working toward for nearly a decade.

The only question left is what they are going to call it.
