Tyler Perry has built a cultural franchise around marriage. He released Why Did I Get Married? in 2007, Why Did I Get Married Too in 2010, and the newly released Why Did I Get Married Again? The films follow couples through messy beginnings, hard work, and eventual stronger bonds.
However, he, the creator, has made it clear again that he’s never getting married.
Tyler Perry is Afraid of Divorce

In a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Perry shut down the question of marriage without hesitation.
“Nope. It’s not the marriage that bothers me, it’s the divorce,” he said.
“Everybody that I know that did well and went broke, it was because of a divorce. So I’m good just being free,” the actor added.
The financial and emotional devastation he has watched others endure is enough to keep him single by choice.

Watching His Own Movies Changed His Mind
On the Today Show, he expanded on the personal shift. When he wrote the first film, Why Did I Get Married? , he still entertained the idea that marriage might eventually suit him.
Now, at this stage of his life, he sees things differently. He said:
“At this age, I’m like, No, that’s not a good idea for me. So, no, there won’t be any marriage for me.”
He joked that watching his own movies “scared [him] out of getting married.” The journey of the characters, which includes ugly starts, stubborn fights, hard-won peace, etc., gave him insight he prefers to apply from the outside.
Choosing Freedom and Time with His Son
Perry is also prioritizing a quieter chapter. He announced he is moving to Puerto Rico and intentionally slowing down after years of relentless output. He says he wants more time with his son, Aman, and the chance to simply enjoy life.
“It’s time to slow down a little bit, enjoy more time with my son, and just take it all in.”
Perry claimed has not been on a date in three decades, underscoring how deliberately he guards that freedom.
The same stories that celebrate couples who stayed the course have convinced their creator that the risk is not worth it for him.
