Tolani Baj has made one thing clear: she is no longer letting alleged copycats get away with it. The reality TV star and entrepreneur recently shared a video on Snapchat warning anyone planning to reproduce her latest bag design that a lawsuit could be waiting for them.

According to Tolani, she has dealt with similar situations before with her Jumbo and Mumbo bags. Despite having the designs registered, she chose not to pursue legal action at the time. The reason, she admitted, was simple. She believed those earlier designs were inspired by existing ideas, making it difficult for her to feel completely justified taking the matter to court.

“You guys did it for my Jumbo and Mumbo bags, even though I had the bags registered. The only reason why I didn’t take it to court was because I know I got the inspiration from somewhere too.”

This time, she says things are different. Tolani explained that she spent time developing the new design and considers it an original creation she worked hard to bring to life. Because of that, she has no intention of overlooking anyone who attempts to recreate it without permission.

“This time around, I took my precious time to create this masterpiece.”

Anticipating the backlash that often follows intellectual property disputes online, she also shared what she described as proof that the design belongs to her.

According to her, the bag has already been registered, and she has the original design files to back up her claims.

“I’m posting this PS now because when I start, I know how Nigerians are very quick to say oppression. This is my proof right here. My design is registered.”

The warning ended with a challenge for anyone who feels confident enough to test her resolve. “If you feel like you have money to waste, copy my bag.” She later captioned the video with three words: “See you in court.”

For many fashion entrepreneurs, Tolani’s frustration sounds familiar. One of the biggest complaints among designers is how quickly successful products can be copied once they gain attention.

A design launches, gains traction online, and before long, cheaper versions begin appearing across social media and marketplaces. Tolani appears to be drawing a clear distinction between inspiration and imitation.

While she acknowledged taking inspiration from existing ideas in the past, she believes her latest design falls into a different category. Whether anyone eventually tests that warning remains to be seen.

One thing, however, is difficult to misunderstand: Tolani Baj wants people to know she is prepared for a legal fight this time around.
