The story of Miss Osasere Okundaye, 16, reported as Nigeria’s youngest Chartered Accountant, has drawn congratulatory remarks from the Hon. Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande. While her achievement, if verified, deserves applause, the manner of reporting poses serious risks to every stakeholder in the accountancy ecosystem, including Osasere herself.

The Facts We Know vs. The Facts We Don’t
What was reported: Name, age 16, and a Ministerial congratulatory message describing it as a record that “surpasses the previous record set in 2022 by Jonathan Adewale, 17”.
What was omitted – and why it matters:
- Entry Route: ICAN has two main paths: ATSWA via 5 O’level credits, or Degree/HND entry. The story does not state which Osasere used. Without this, “16” is context-free and misleading.
- Timeline & Status: No date of registration, duration, or current academic status. ICAN also requires 36 months of practical experience before ACA induction. Qualification is not the same as being able to practice.
- ICAN Verification: No official statement, candidate number, or confirmation from the Institute itself. A political congratulatory message is not a professional attestation.
The Dangers of a Weak, Unqualified Celebration
- Danger to the Profession & ICAN’s Brand
When a headline reduces ACA to a “youngest ever” contest without context, it undermines public confidence in the rigor of the qualification. ACA is a standards-based, experience-driven designation, not a speed record. Incomplete reporting invites the perception that standards are being lowered for virality. - Danger to Parents, Students & Schools
The Minister’s statement that Osasere is “a shining example… young Nigerians can break barriers” will be interpreted by many parents as: “Abandon university, start ICAN at 13.” Yet, ATSWA entry only requires 5 O’level credits, and there is no minimum age. The story fails to state that a 16-year-old cannot be legally employed in most accounting firms, cannot sign off audits, and cannot be inducted until 3 years’ experience is logged. We risk creating a generation of qualified but unemployable minors, leading to frustration and burnout. - Danger to Employers & Firms
Firms will face pressure to “recognize the youngest CA.” But labour law, insurance, and safeguarding policies make full-time employment of a 16-year-old in audit, tax, or forensic roles impractical and risky. This puts HR and partners in a difficult position and distracts from real talent needs. - Danger to Osasere Okundaye Herself
This is most critical. A minor has been placed at the center of a national professional debate without clarity on her welfare, schooling, or mentorship. If the record is accurate, she deserves protection and proper guidance, not viral fame. If any detail is inaccurate, she will bear the burden of public doubt later. The story uses her achievement but does not safeguard her interests.
What Responsible Journalism Should Have Done
A credible report would have included: Full name with consent, O’level record, ATS vs degree path, diet/year of start/ completion, ICAN’s official confirmation, and a clear explanation of age, experience, and the employment limitations she would face.
Conclusion
Let us be clear: Excellence at 16 is remarkable and Osasere and her family deserve congratulations. But our profession must insist on accuracy. Celebrating without context does not honour the candidate; it exposes her, misleads the public, and cheapens the ACA we all worked hard to earn. ICAN doesn’t look good with this poorly researched and crafted story.
I urge ICAN to issue an official statement clarifying the route, diet, and induction status. Until then, we as professionals should resist amplifying incomplete narratives.
Our qualification is too valuable to be reduced to a headline.
