A Nigerian man has died following an alleged encounter with South African police officers during a raid in Bellville, Cape Town, on Thursday, 23 July 2026.

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has officially identified the deceased as Ibeh Chika Simon, from Abia State. The incident took place at the Parksig Villas Complex in Bellville.

According to members of the Nigerian community in South Africa and videos circulating on social media, officers were conducting what witnesses described as a drug search operation at the complex when the incident occurred.

Footage shared online appears to show officers restraining Chika Ibe in what witnesses described as a brutal manner. In one clip, an officer is allegedly seen using what appears to be a polyethene bag to suffocate him repeatedly. Separate footage from the scene shows another Nigerian man with a visible gunshot wound to the mouth.

The Nigerian community claims that Chika was subjected to severe beating, torture, and inhuman treatment during the operation. A second Nigerian man, identified by the Nigerian Consulate as Egwabor Patrick Chuks, was shot during the same operation and is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Footage later showed South African police officers removing the body of the alleged victim from the complex. Members of the Nigerian community present identified him as Chika Ibe.

Official Responses

Despite denials from the South African Police a video from Bellville, Cape Town, appears to show officers restraining Chika Ibe, a Nigerian from Abia State, in a manner that some witnesses allege involved strangulation and suffocation.

The South African Police Service has denied the allegations and stated that the case is under investigation. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate, known as IPID (the body mandated to investigate misconduct and criminal offences by South African police), has confirmed it has opened a formal investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the incident and called for an immediate, transparent investigation. In a statement, the government emphasised that no allegation against a suspect justifies excessive force and that every individual is entitled to due process under the law.

The Nigeria Citizens Association South Africa, NICASA, has also called for an urgent independent investigation by IPID. NICASA identified the deceased as Chika Ibe from Abia State and alleged he was beaten and suffocated during the operation.

Part of a Wider Pattern

Chika Ibe’s death occurs amidst escalating concerns about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa. According to reports, at least five Nigerians have been reported killed in 2026 amid a combination of xenophobic attacks and alleged police brutality.

The other victims named include Amaramiro Emmanuel, Ekpenyong Andrew, Emeka Charles Iroegbu, and Musa Yunana Joe. Some deaths have been linked to xenophobic mob violence, while others involve allegations directly implicating security forces.

Chika Ibe is now the latest name on the list.

South African Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has disclosed that numerous local artists are having their performances cancelled throughout the continent.

According to her, a well-known artist even told her personally that every single one of her scheduled shows abroad has been scrapped.

The reason for the cancellations are not far-fetched. They are a direct result of growing solidarity among other African countries in response to reported xenophobic attacks, anti-foreigner violence, and community-led actions targeting illegal immigrants in South Africa.

Since the attacks on other African nationals, tensions have escalated as many nations across Africa perceive South Africans as hostile toward fellow Africans. The growing incidents of violence against foreign nationals, business disruptions, and vigilante enforcement of immigration rules have prompted a strong reaction:

• Promoters, event organizers, and audiences in countries such as Nigeria and Zimbabwe are boycotting South African talent in protest.

• South African musicians and performers, who depend significantly on regional tours, festivals, and collaborations for their livelihoods, are now suffering major financial losses.

Kubayi highlighted that the majority of South African artists earn significant income from performances across Africa. She urged communities to stop unlawful vigilantism and instead support proper legal channels for dealing with immigration issues.

Africans have always been known to support each other. This is no different now that one nation has chosen to be the ‘black sheep.’ Other African nations are unwilling to maintain normal cultural and business relations with South Africa while these issues persist.

Now, this goes beyond a single South African artist. The entertainment industry in South Africa as a whole is feeling the effects, with many shows being dropped entirely. This follows other African nations’ support for Mexico in the opening match against South Africa on June 11. We will continue to watch to see what comes next in the ‘South Africa Vs Other African Nation’ drama.

There is an urgent deadline of June 30 hovering over South African cities like Durban and many others, set by anti-illegal immigration organisations for unauthorised foreigners to leave South Africa.

Fear is growing among migrants following weeks of violent attacks and vigilantism. Many have already faced forced evictions from their businesses, public humiliation, and clashes involving tear gas and rubber bullets.

Outside Durban’s Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre, a group of immigrants are waiting for their fate in fear.

Despite speculation about undocumented immigrants, the Department of Home Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal and city officials said that out of 457 foreign nationals processed in central Durban, only two were found to be undocumented.

Credit: Dailymaverick

Also, according to the UNHCR, South Africa hosted more than 167,000 refugees and asylum-seekers in 2025.

Bahebwe, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and permanent resident of South Africa speaking to Daily Maverick, described the xenophobic protests as witch hunts that shield criminals and extortionists. In response to rising xenophobia, refugees from various backgrounds have united for mutual support.

What Happens After June 30th?

We only need to look at the past to accurately predict the future. Just how many immigrants have been killed in South Africa?

The historical data paints a grim picture of escalating violence. According to Human Rights Watch, 62 people were killed in xenophobic violence in 2008. By 2011, 154 incidents were recorded along with 99 fatalities and 100 serious injuries.

The following year saw an even greater surge; in 2012, 238 incidents were reported—resulting in 120 people killed and 7,500 others displaced. Alphonse Munyaneza, a UNHCR Regional Community Services Officer, spoke about these 2012 displacements, particularly around Bloemfontein and Botshabelo, noting that over 300 shops were affected during the violence that year.

This crisis bled directly into the following months. In an essay published by Lawyers for Human Rights in 2013, it was noted that the UNHCR tracked an estimated 130 incidents of attacks on foreigners just between January and May of 2013. During that five-month window, 73 people were seriously injured and some 5,000 others were displaced, with the organisation adding that 154 people total were seriously injured in attacks around that period.

The pattern of violence persisted into the next decade. Human Rights Watch documented 12 deaths in 2019, and by 2022, numbers spiked again back to near-record highs.

With these dire figures in the past, the upcoming June 30 deadline instills fear and a heavy sense of foreboding about what awaits.

On Tuesday, the Nigeria Catchball Federation made an announcement that would have seemed extreme just a few weeks ago. The federation pulled out of a forthcoming international competition in South Africa, citing escalating xenophobic attacks and growing concerns over the safety of Nigerian athletes and officials.

NCF President Bola Babarinde said the decision served the best interest of players, officials, and the entire Nigerian contingent. “The prevailing tension and uncertainty have inevitably impacted the integrity and feasibility of the competition,” he said.

For anyone following what has unfolded in South Africa this week, the decision makes complete sense.

What Has Actually Been Happening

This is not a vague atmosphere of tension. There are specific incidents, specific names, and specific deaths.

Two Nigerians, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, died in separate incidents linked to rising anti-foreigner tensions. The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg confirmed both deaths.

Emmanuel died from injuries sustained after personnel of the South African National Defence Force beat him on April 20. Meanwhile, police arrested Andrew on April 19 in the Booysens area of Pretoria following an alleged altercation with Tshwane Metro Police officers. Someone later discovered his body at the Pretoria Central Mortuary.

However, what makes these deaths particularly disturbing is that security personnel, the people meant to protect everyone in the country, allegedly carried out both killings.

In addition to the deaths, mobs targeted foreign nationals across several cities. In one widely circulated clip, protesters confronted a Nigerian trader during an anti-immigrant rally and ordered him to leave the country with his family. Despite his plea that he had lived there for years and needed to feed his children, the group insisted he leave.

In a related incident, attackers shot an Ethiopian national dead in downtown Johannesburg in what authorities suspect was a targeted killing. CCTV footage showed the victim being approached and shot at close range. Despite ongoing investigations, police had made no arrests.

The Scale of It

Fresh waves of attacks left Nigerians counting losses, with businesses looted and residents fleeing for safety in parts of Johannesburg and Durban. Mobs targeted foreign-owned shops, vandalised property, and attacked African immigrants throughout the week.

Following the outbreak, the Nigerian Consulate issued an advisory warning of violent demonstrations in East London, Cape Town, Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal, as well as planned protests in Gauteng Province.

Meanwhile, one particularly chilling message came from a group organising a national shutdown planned for May 4. “We are xenophobic,” the message read. “We want all foreigners, documented or not, out of this country.”

Documented or not. That is the part that matters. Legal papers, valid identification, years of living and working in the country— none of it matters when the people coming for you have already decided your documentation is irrelevant.

Credit: BBC News Pidgin

Nigeria’s Response

As a result, the Nigerian government called on South Africa to guarantee the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attacks and urged Pretoria to uphold its obligations. “As brotherly nations, Nigeria calls on South Africa to protect the lives and property of foreign nationals,” the statement read.

In addition, NICASA President Frank Onyekwelu described the situation as alarming. “We are witnessing a troubling normalisation of hostility through inflammatory rhetoric, unlawful intimidation, and discriminatory enforcement practices,” he said, calling for urgent diplomatic intervention.

Following the advisory, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission told Nigerians to close their businesses temporarily, avoid confrontations, and monitor local media for updates.

SEE ALSO: Kenya’s President, Ruto, Said Nigerians Need a Translator to Be Understood

This Is Not New, And That Is the Problem

South Africa witnessed similar outbreaks in 2008, 2015, 2019, and beyond. The 2008 attacks killed over 60 people and displaced thousands. Despite repeated cycles of violence, perpetrators have operated with near-total impunity, reinforcing a culture where attacks on foreigners rarely face punishment.

Each time the cycle repeats, South African authorities issue the same assurances. However, those assurances have never held. The growing crisis has drawn condemnation from the United Nations Human Rights Council, with experts warning of violations of the right to life and physical security. Furthermore, the situation has escalated to the point where even citizens perceived as foreign face targeting.

The Nigeria Catchball Federation withdrawing from a tournament is one team making a practical safety decision. However, it also represents something much larger — a growing number of African countries deciding that sending their people to South Africa carries a risk they are no longer willing to accept.

The question now is whether South Africa’s government will finally act before more countries follow.

Angry protesters in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, reportedly mobilised by members of ActionSA, have taken to the streets in a series of violent demonstrations.

The unrest is said to be in response to claims that Solomon Ezike was crowned as an “Igbo King” in the province. The alleged coronation has been condemned as disrespectful and a breach of local customs and national sovereignty.

According to Newsroom Afrika, up to 10 vehicles and a building were torched. Other vehicles and properties allegedly belonging to foreign nationals were also destroyed. However, in a statement by the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in South Africa, it was clarified that no Igbo king coronation took place in South Africa.

The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has said there was no Igbo king coronation in South Africa. In a statement released on March 26, it stated that “contrary to the narrative in the public domain, no coronation took place and none was intended.”

It further explained that Nigeria values its relationship with South Africa, which is built on mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared goal of developing Africa and keeping the continent united. Hence, it respects the government, laws, culture, and people of South Africa.

The statement added that Nigeria is a diverse country with many ethnic groups, including the Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo, and cultural events are central to their way of life. Among the Igbo, festivals like the New Yam Festival (Iri Ji), Masquerade festivals (Mmanwu), and Traditional Marriages (Igba Nkwu) reflect history, spirituality, and community values. Title-taking ceremonies also highlight Igbo culture through rituals, recognition, and celebration. It stated that, in this context, the event in East London was purely a cultural expression with no political or territorial intent.

What Now?

As tensions rise in the country over the alleged coronation, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa issued a 10-point advisory to Nigerians living there.

In a report by The Cable, Nigerians have been advised to stay safe and remain cautious amid rising hostility. The commission urged them to limit their movements, avoid strangers, keep a low profile, and strictly obey local laws. Nigerians were also told to suspend social and cultural activities and avoid making statements that could further inflame tensions, especially on social and mainstream media.

Isaac was murdered after accepting what appeared to be a routine ride request. Investigators have confirmed that Isaac responded to a ride request from passengers who had booked his e-hailing service.

Dashcam footage showed the suspects assaulting him inside the car while he was driving. A man seated in the back grabbed him and strangled him while another accomplice assisted.

Authorities confirmed Isaac was strangled to death and robbed of valuables, including his phone.

His hijacked car and body were later found abandoned in Atteridgeville, several kilometres from where he was attacked.

The killing sparked outrage across South Africa and Nigeria, especially after dashcam footage of the attack circulated online.

How many Nigerians have been killed in South Africa?

The figures of how many Nigerians have been killed in South Africa are fragmented since there is an absence of a central reporting source.

Due to xenophobic riots in South Africa, the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) reported that more than 125 Nigerians lost their lives between 2016 and 2019. Despite COVID-19 lockdowns, violence persisted in 2020–2022, NiDCOM estimated a toll of over 150 by late 2021.This violence was ascribed to extrajudicial killings and business-related conflicts.

Attackers in 2023–2025 turned their attention to Nigerian businesspeople, increasing the number of unofficial reports to more than 200.

Causes of Nigerian deaths in South Africa

Available data shows Nigerians are killed due to multiple causes, including:

1. Robbery and violent crime

Isaac Satlat’s killing falls into this category. Many Nigerian victims are targeted during robberies, hijackings, or organised crime.

2. Drug-related disputes

South African authorities said 39 Nigerians between 2017 and 2019 died in drug-related conflicts involving other Nigerians.

3. Police violence and shootings

Some Nigerians have died during police operations or shootings.

4. Xenophobic attacks

Some Nigerians have also been victims of anti-foreigner mob violence, especially during xenophobic riots.

Isaac’s death has brought attention again to the violence against Nigerians living in South Africa. While authorities have moved quickly to arrest the suspects in his case, this pattern of violent crime has claimed the lives of many Nigerians over the years.

For many in the Nigerian community, justice for Isaac is not only about punishing those responsible but also about preventing the next tragedy.
