New Changes to South Africa Visa and Refugee Policies

Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber has announced an overhaul of South Africa’s immigration and asylum. According to EWN, the reforms are designed to modernise Home Affairs, reduce system abuse, and put the national interest by attracting skilled migrants.

  • Introduction of the “First Safe Country” Principle: To take off pressure on the asylum system, this principle will stop seekers from choosing South Africa as a first destination if they have already passed through or received protection in another safe country.
  • A Points-Based System for Residency: The South African government wants to move away from “arbitrary and subjective” decision-making and replace it with a new merit-based assessment that will determine eligibility for citizenship and permanent residence.
  • Digital Visa Integration: A new digital system will be launched to streamline the application process, speed up approvals for qualified applicants, and significantly reduce the risk of fraud.
  • Economic Prioritisation: The reforms is supposed to fast-track citizenship for highly skilled people. As Schreiber noted, the goal is to “grant citizenship more quickly to people who genuinely are contributing to South Africa.”
