According to the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Report 2025, Nigeria has been ranked the world’s most generous country. The country tops global charts in key parameters of charitable giving.

This report is interesting because Nigeria is home to one of the largest concentrations of impoverished people globally. Approximately 141 million people live below the poverty line, but somehow, it is the world’s most generous country. This underscores the kind hearts of Nigerians who give because of deep-rooted values.

The top generous countries are predominantly from Africa and Asia, which also underscores a broader regional spirit of solidarity.

The report by CAF was based on surveys of over 60,000 people across more than 100 countries. This survey highlighted Nigeria’s standout performance. According to CAF’s survey:

•  89% of Nigerians donated money in 2024. This number is the highest proportion globally.

•  On average, Nigerians give 2.83% of their income to charities, religious causes, or individuals in need. This also makes the country rank first worldwide in the category.

•  Nigerians also volunteer significantly, averaging about 13.5 hours per person annually, well above the global average.

Generosity is a continent-wide thing for Africans. Africans overall donate an average of 1.6% of their income, compared to just 0.6% in Europe. However, while Nigeria excels in donation percentage and participation rates, overall World Giving Index scores, which also factor in helping strangers and volunteering, may rank countries differently in some years. The 2025 report’s focus on actual giving firmly places Nigeria at the top. )

Why Nigeria Ranks Most Generous Country in the World

This achievement is more remarkable given Nigeria’s economic challenges. With high poverty rates and rising living costs, Nigerians continue to give. Generosity in Nigeria is woven into the social fabric.

Religious traditions play a huge role in the generosity of their citizens. There is almsgiving in Christian and Muslim communities. Religious leaders also make broader calls to support the needy, which are seen as moral and spiritual duties.

The communal living in Africa, which supports giving, contributes to the reason Nigeria ranks as the most generous country.  It’s common for relatives, neighbors, and even strangers to receive help with school fees, medical bills, weddings, or funerals, virtually and physically.  The philosophy of “Ubuntu” (I am because we are), which emphasises interconnected humanity, resonates across many African cultures, including in Nigeria

From sharing meals to contributing to community projects, giving is normalized and expected.

Nigeria shows that generosity is not measured by the amount of money; there’s always something to share.

Ironically, despite leading objectively, according to the African Philanthropy Forum (APF), Nigerians rank themselves 22nd in self-perceived generosity, a sign of humility where giving is simply “part of life.”
