Nigeria has been ranked as the African country with the strongest naval fleet in 2026, according to the latest Global Firepower (GF) report, which assesses the military strength of 145 armed forces worldwide.
The report places Nigeria 22nd globally, with a total of 152 naval vessels, the largest fleet on the African continent. This position puts Nigeria ahead of Egypt and Algeria, which ranked second and third in Africa with 149 and 111 vessels, respectively.
Nigeria’s naval strength is largely driven by its patrol fleet. Out of the 152 vessels, 132 are patrol units, accounting for nearly 98 percent of the total fleet.
According to Global Firepower, the structure of Nigeria’s naval fleet reflects the country’s capabilities in protecting its maritime security as well as the protection of inland and coastal waters.
This ranking means a lot to the Nigerian navy considering the country’s maritime responsibility, with an 853-kilometer coastline and more than 8,600 kilometers of inland waterways under its watch.
Nigeria’s position at the top in Africa reflects the country’s sustained focus on maritime security and the steady expansion of its naval strengths, as it works to protect the nation’s trade routes, cut illegal activities at sea, and maintain stability within the region.
Beyond Nigeria, the Global Firepower ranking also showcased several other African nations making significant investments in naval power.
