Fans across the globe are still honouring the life and music of Michael Jackson 17 years after his passing. The Michael Jackson legacy was visible everywhere, from candlelit memorials to social media tributes.
Jackson died on June 25, 2009, aged 50, from acute propofol intoxication, while deep in rehearsals for his This Is It London residency.
Fans pay tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson
It all started with a social media post on X asking about a celebrity death that hit the hardest.
While some picked celebrities like Kobe Bryant, Chadwick Boseman and even Mohbad, tributes flooded in as fans call Jackson’s 2009 passing the celebrity loss that hit hardest, with many recalling tears and deep personal connections from childhood.
Fresh data crowns him Google’s most-searched artist of 2026 so far, fueled by the record-breaking ‘Michael’ biopic from April that drew new listeners to hits like ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Thriller.’
Streams have surged, charts have revived, and posts celebrate his barrier-breaking ‘Thriller’ era, proving the King of Pop still unites generations.

How fans marked Michael Jackson’s death 17th anniversary
Fans visited Forest Lawn in Los Angeles, his Hollywood Walk of Fame star and the Jackson family home in Gary, Indiana, leaving photographs, handwritten messages, flowers and candles on June 25. In Gary, visitors left handmade tributes, sang, danced in the street and reflected on his enduring legacy.
The tributes reached well beyond the United States. Fans gathered at his statue in Guangzhou, China, and at a memorial site in Australia. Others coordinated a performance of “Heal the World” at the moment of his death, and dozens sang it in London’s Trafalgar Square.
The family joined in too. Prince Jackson shared a throwback photo of his father cradling him as a newborn. Jaafar Jackson, who played Michael on screen, posted “17 years and missed every single day.”
Biopic keeps Michael Jackson in the spotlight
This year’s remembrance came with fresh momentum. The biopic Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, crossed $1 billion worldwide in July, becoming the first biopic to reach that milestone, overtaking Oppenheimer as the highest-grossing biopic of all time in June.

The film has also lifted his music. Thriller climbed to number seven on the Billboard 200, and his solo catalogue logged a career-best 137.5 million U.S. streams in the opening week.
The success has not silenced debate. The film has drawn criticism for sidestepping the child sexual abuse allegations made against Jackson.
Filmmakers were legally barred from portraying one accuser’s claims. Even so, the studio is expected to greenlight at least one more film about his life.
Why Michael Jackson’s legacy endures
Beyond the music, family and fans point to his humanitarian side. Prince Jackson now leads the Heal Los Angeles Foundation, formed in 2016. On the 10th anniversary, the estate urged fans to honor him through charitable acts such as planting a tree or volunteering at a shelter.
Seventeen years on, Michael Jackson’s legacy shows no sign of fading, and it continues to spark both celebration and debate.
