On Saturday, 30th May, the Mexican federal authorities found a tunnel believed to extend to the US in Nueva Tijuana, a Mexico-US border neighbourhood.

According to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office, there was a raid involving the Mexican federal authorities and the Mexican Navy.

The authorities discovered the tunnel while they were searching a residence in the area for firearms. The tunnel, which looked like it had existed for a long time, was almost 900 metres long (think about the length of three football fields).

The NYPost also records that the tunnel structure is 21 feet underground (more than five times deeper than a standard grave).

The tunnel is also reported to have sophisticated structures in place, like a rail mechanism for moving items, lighting and a ventilation system. This suggests that active logistics have been going to and fro between the US and Mexico.

The Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Tijuana, Baja California, says it was used as a storage, logistics, and trafficking centre for weapons, explosives, and illegal drugs.

Nueva Tijuana in Mexico is on the other side of San Diego (Otay Mesa area) in the US, which is likely the other end of the tunnel.

This is not a new one in the Tijuana-San Diego corridor. The area is known for such tunnels due to its urban density and proximity to ports of entry. In 2020, US officials found one stretching to more than 4000 feet, according to the BBC. This tunnel also led to Tijuana.

The authorities have confiscated cartridges, suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, cell phones and various documents.

Now, U.S. agencies like Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Border Patrol are involved in the Mexico-US border tunnel investigation.
