Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has found herself at the centre of a debate after expressing her firm beliefs about where she stands in her son Juwon’s life, even when he eventually gets married.
The actress made the statements during a live video session with her children, directing much of the conversation towards her daughter, Michelle.
Aigbe used the conversation to set clear expectations for her son’s future wife while explaining the sacrifices she has made as a mother. 
The actress said she intends to welcome her son’s future wife into the family and treat her like a daughter. However, she also made it clear that treating her daughter-in-law like a daughter would not mean giving her the same position as his mother when it comes to certain demands.
Aigbe explained that if she and her son’s wife asked him for something at the same time, she would expect her son, Juwon, to fulfil her request first.

Mercy Aigbe made her position clear while explaining why she believes mothers should receive priority from their sons.
She stated that her son would take good care of his wife because she would become part of the family. However, she maintained that her position as his mother would remain different. In her words:
“I don’t understand what you people are trying to do with my son. He is my son, and I gave birth to him. He is going to take good care of his wife because she will be like a daughter to me. If his wife and I ask him for a Birkin bag, he would buy it for me before his wife. I breastfed him.”

Her statement has drawn attention because of the way she compared her position as a mother with the position her son’s future wife would occupy in his life.
Aigbe’s comments also highlight the expectations some mothers may have about their relationship with their sons after marriage.
While she acknowledged that her son’s wife would receive care and acceptance from her, the actress insisted that motherhood gives her a special place in her son’s life.
The conversation has sparked reactions around the balance between a mother’s relationship with her son and the relationship between a married man and his wife.
For Aigbe, however, her message remained clear: she expects her son to recognise her sacrifices as his mother, even after he gets married.
