Lincoln University has abruptly cancelled its decision to award Mahama an honorary doctorate a few days before the scheduled ceremony in March 2026.
Lincoln University, on March 19, announced its decision to honour Ghanaian president John Dramani Mahama with an honorary doctorate for his leadership, public service, and global advocacy for justice and reparations.
The American university fixed March 26, 2026, for the honorary conferral event.
“Lincoln University is deeply honoured to welcome President John Dramani Mahama to our campus and to bestow upon him an honorary degree in recognition of his distinguished leadership,” said the university president, Dr Brenda A. Allen.

The decision has reportedly been reversed after some members of the university raised concerns about Mr Mahama’s perceived position on Ghana’s anti-gay bill.
Ghanaian officials insisted that the issue had not come up during discussions earlier, noting that all preparations for the visit had already been finalised shortly before the ceremony.
The embassy said it understands that the university can respond to concerns from its community, but pointed out that the issue is about a law still being discussed in Ghana—not just Mahama’s opinion.
It also supported Mr Mahama, saying he believes in democracy and talking through sensitive issues. The embassy added that it hopes the strong relationship between Ghana and the university will help settle the situation.
