After over 75 years of saying a firm “no” to blood transfusions, Jehovah’s Witness church have made a surprising update.
Members of the faith can now have their own blood removed, stored, and later used during medical procedures like surgeries.
Sounds like a great news, right? Well, not entirely.

Here’s What Jehovah’s Witnesses Now Allow
They’re still not allowed to receive blood from anyone else.
According to Gerrit Lösch, a top leader in the church, the new update gives members more say in how their blood is handled medically.
“Each Christian must decide for himself how his blood will be used in medical and surgical care.”
But before you think this changes everything, the group insists their core belief hasn’t moved. Their stance is still rooted in biblical teachings that instruct believers to abstain from blood.
What Actually Changed?
In simple terms:
- Jehovah’s Witnesses can use their own blood for transfusions.
- They are still not allowed to accept someone else’s blood for transfusion.
However, some people aren’t buying the good news. They argue that in real-life emergencies like accidents or serious illnesses this development doesn’t go far enough, since donated blood can still be the difference between life and death.
As this change makes the rounds online, a deeper, more uncomfortable question is coming up: what about the people who already died because they refused blood transfusions?
For decades, many Jehovah’s Witness members turned down transfusions out of faith, even in life-or-death situations.
