The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), E.A. Adeboye, has met and appeared with several Nigerian political leaders at public events. These interactions have often drawn public attention because of his influence as a religious leader.

Adeboye has consistently said that he focuses on providing spiritual guidance, prayers, and counsel rather than taking part in partisan politics.

On 2 June 2026, RCCG’s public relations team responded to public claims that Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye had shown support for the current Nigerian administration and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The church addressed what it described as false narratives and clarified that Pastor Adeboye has maintained a neutral political stance. It emphasised that he consistently encourages members to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and vote for candidates of their choice, regardless of political party affiliation.

“Pastor E.A. Adeboye has always encouraged members of The Redeemed Christian Church of God to get their PVCs and vote for anyone of their choice. He has always maintained a neutral stance on political parties, as members of the Church are members of various political parties.”

The statement explained that RCCG members belong to different political parties, and the church does not endorse any political party or candidate.

It also denied claims that Pastor Adeboye cancelled a planned protest against the government. According to the statement, this claim is false and misleading.

RCCG stated that Pastor Adeboye was only informing RCCG members about an official change made by the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, where the grand finale of the Three-Day Prayer Programme was moved to a central location with a rally around it, and he was not involved in or supporting any political protest.

The statement further addressed public criticism that Nigerian pastors, including Adeboye, do not speak strongly enough about insecurity in the country. It noted that Pastor Adeboye has, on several occasions, spoken about national issues such as insecurity, corruption, economic hardship, governance, and elections.

However, the statement explained that he often uses moral guidance, prayer, and counsel rather than partisan political confrontation. It stated that he focuses on teaching values and encouraging prayer rather than attacking political figures or taking political sides.

The statement read in part:
“Pastor E.A. Adeboye has, on several occasions, spoken about national issues such as insecurity, corruption, economic hardship, elections, governance, and the need for righteous leadership. However, he often chooses the language of moral guidance, prayer, and counsel rather than partisan political confrontation.”

Following the statement, Nigerians reacted on X (formerly Twitter), with many users questioning the clarification. Many argued that the church’s released statements contradict past actions during previous administrations.

Several users referenced the period of former President Goodluck Jonathan, claiming that religious leaders appeared more outspoken during incidents such as the Chibok girls’ abduction.

Others insisted that they had expected a protest to take place but said the plan changed unexpectedly. One user wrote that they prepared placards for a protest, only for the plan to shift to a prayer walk around the church premises. He said that the sudden change raised questions among members of the church.

Is Pastor Adeboye Politically Neutral?

His statements say he’s neutral, but while Adeboye is being scapegoated due to his close ties with President Tinubu’s wife, who is a pastor in his church, the current issue highlights the contrast between what Nigerians expect from religious leaders and how they actually respond to national crises.

Nevertheless, most people want stronger public statements on political and social issues from church leaders who often prefer to focus on prayer, moral guidance, and neutrality.
