A wedding that was supposed to be a joyous celebration quickly turned into a battlefield, ending in a swift divorce filing.
According to ITV News, guests from the groom’s side arrived late to the reception. Food had already finished, except for the portion the bride had thoughtfully reserved for her parents.
The groom’s mother quietly pulled the bride aside and explained the situation. She asked if her new daughter-in-law could share some of that food for the tired, long-distance guests. 
The bride refused vehemently. She insisted the food was for her parents. Then things escalated rather quickly. Frustrated, the mother-in-law took some scoops herself. The bride, feeling disrespected, grabbed the food and poured it back into the cooler.
In the heat of the moment, the mother-in-law slapped her. The bride slapped her right back. You could imagine the look on the faces of the guests. Bride slaps mother-in-law over food?
An abomination in this part of the world.
When the groom knew what had happened, he was furious and disappointed with his new wife. He patiently allowed the reception to end; however, two days later, he filed for divorce.

The Legal Reality in Nigeria
While emotions ran high and the husband moved quickly, legal practitioner Franca Oseh Kayodele reminded the public of an important fact: In Nigeria, a marriage must be at least two years old before a divorce petition can typically be filed (subject to specific legal exceptions). So even though the husband acted fast, the law might slow things down.
Many have condemned the reaction of the bride and are on the side of the mother-in-law. One angry commenter said: “I will send that girl packing immediately. I wouldn’t even waste two days.”
Another said, “The behaviour of the girl was not in order at all. She disrespected her mother-in-law.”
Weddings are beautiful, but they’re also stressful. A typical Nigerian bride is more stressed than everyone else at the party. A little understanding from everyone involved, including the couple and both sets of parents, can go a long way.
