Years after the death of former NAFDAC Director-General Dora Akunyili, Nigerians are once again talking about the Akunyili family.
This time, the conversation is not about fake drugs, politics, or public service.
It is about a family tree.
A graphic shared online by data platform Immortal Stats recently drew attention to the achievements of members of the Akunyili family, prompting many social media users to ask the same question: how does one family produce so many accomplished people?
For many Nigerians, Dora Akunyili remains the most familiar name.
As Director-General of NAFDAC between 2001 and 2008, she led a campaign against counterfeit medicines that transformed Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry. During her tenure, authorities reported a significant reduction in the circulation of fake drugs, making her one of the country’s most respected public servants.
Dora Akunyili

Long before her family attracted attention for their individual achievements, Dora Akunyili had already become a household name in Nigeria.
She served as Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) between 2001 and 2008, where she led a high-profile fight against counterfeit medicines. Her work earned her hundreds of local and international awards and established her reputation as one of Nigeria’s most admired public servants.
She later served as Minister of Information and Communications between 2008 and 2010.
Dr. Chike Akunyili

Dora’s husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, also built a respected legacy of his own.
Before his death in 2021, he served as Chief Medical Director of St. Leo’s Hospital and reportedly provided free medical care to seminarians for more than four decades.
The Vatican later honoured him with the Papal Knight of Saint John award in recognition of his contributions to healthcare and service.
Nnenna (Nnenka) Akunyili-Crosby

Among the Akunyili children, Nnenna Akunyili Crosby is perhaps the most internationally recognised.
The Nigerian-born artist has built a global reputation through her distinctive mixed-media artworks, which combine photography, painting, and collage. Her works have been displayed in some of the world’s leading museums and galleries.
In 2017, she received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, popularly known as the “Genius Grant.” Earlier this year, she attracted fresh attention after creating the first official joint portrait of former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Ijeoma Akunyili

Ijeoma Akunyili has made her mark in healthcare leadership in the United States.
In 2023, she became the first Black Chief Medical Officer of Jersey City Medical Center. Beyond hospital administration, she has also held academic appointments and contributed to healthcare policy and medical education.
Her achievement placed her among the most senior Nigerian healthcare professionals working in the United States.
Chidiogo Akunyili-Parr

Chidiogo Akunyili-Parr followed a different path.
She is known for her work in leadership development, women’s empowerment, and education. Through the She ROARS initiative, she has worked with women leaders across different sectors while promoting female leadership and inclusion.
She is also the author of I Am Because We Are, a book that explores family, identity, and leadership.
Edozie Akunyili

Edozie Akunyili pursued a career in medicine and currently practices in the United States.
After graduating from the University of Chicago Medical School, he specialised in emergency medicine. His work places him on the front lines of healthcare, treating patients facing critical and life-threatening medical conditions.
Somto Akunyili

Like her brother Edozie, Somto Akunyili also pursued medicine.
She graduated from the University of Chicago Medical School and later specialised in neuroradiology, a field focused on diagnosing conditions affecting the brain, spine, and nervous system through medical imaging.
Her career has further strengthened the family’s reputation in the medical profession.
Obumneme Akunyili

The only son in the family, Obumneme Akunyili, built his career in public administration and project management.
He previously served as Director-General of the Anambra State Project Monitoring Office, where he oversaw the implementation and monitoring of government projects.
His work reflects the family’s continued connection to public service beyond the legacy established by his mother.
In a country where public conversations often focus on political families, business dynasties, and celebrity households, the Akunyilis present a different story—one built around education, public service, medicine, leadership, and the arts.
